I've had FRS (Family Radio Service) walkie-talkies for years and I got a deal on a more powerful GMRS model today. It's a Motorola Talkabout T5920 and I'm impressed with the size and weight-- easy pocket size and 6.2 ounces with a set of alkalines.

It seems to be a no brainer for a kit to have one or two of these radios to keep tabs on the family or find others. I've seen one model with a GPS built in that will relay your coordinates to someone with same model. That struck me as a great idea when out with kids.

The other easy one is a CB. Walkie talkies can have decent range and a base or well set up vehicle can have decent reach.

Anybody have such stuff in their kits?

running around the neighborhood as kids my mom always made me take a little two way walkie-talkie from radioshack. i think we ended up with three and a base unit.

it was a good way for her to keep tabs on us, and for us to keep her updated with when we expected to be home.

it is a good idea to add these to a kit, especially with kids. allows for you to give them more freedom, while maintaining a watchful eye over them.

Before I had a cel phone, Id take one with me when hiking alone . Id leave the other turned on and on the same channel with my vehicle. Often my brother or dad would happen by and talk.

We use walkie-talkies sometimes in our scouts. It is very handy to use to talk to other leaders to coordinate everything without having to leave the kids alone when something has to be discussed or said.
I don't own them myself but lend them from a friend or rent them when we need them.

We've had them as part of our gear for years. They are older models but work for our needs.
