I'm designing a 2x72 grinder, and curious what would be the ideal layout for a flat platen. I plan to use a 6"x14" piece of .5 aluminum attached to a 1.5" steel square stock arm. Does that sound ok? I want to try and make my own wheels on a friends lathe, but my research shows that people use anything from 2" to 2-3/8" aluminum rollers in length. I have 2" diameter stock. Is one length better than the other? I would think with the wider roller, there may be unneeded stress on the belt to curve over a flat platen and grind the bevels.

I've never used a grinder, so any help would be appreciated.

Also, I would eventually like to get a commercially available small wheel attachment. Can anybody tell me the proper spacing for the mounting bolt and the pivot bolt on the platen? I'd like to be able to use the same arm if I can, so having the proper anchor points from the beginning would be great.

Is there a benefit to having wheels longer than 2 inches? Only when pertaining to the platen. I could see it on tracking and drive wheels.
