2"x72" grinder

The description sort of sounds like a Grizzly. For $600+, you can get a Coote with a good surplus motor.

Says 1/2 hp motor. Not impressive. Depending on the grinder unit itself it may be worthwhile to fit it with a bigger one but without even a single pic who knows?

Even 1 HP is very easy to bog down on a grinder. I think you would be frustrated with that very quickly.

You might should try to find a maker near you where you could pay them a visit and perhaps try out somebody's grinder.

Two things that are very important are the ability to swap in different attachments and belts, and also the stability of the grinder. A light, hopping, vibrating, grinder is very difficult to use. A heavy steady smooth grinder makes your learning curve a lot faster.

I thought as much. Oh well, it was worth a shot. I emailed them and asked for some pictures. Perhaps some tinkering could make it somewhat worthwhile... But then again, there's always the grizzly ;)

If you're a tinkerer - perhaps build a "no-weld-grinder"? They're KMG clones you build yourself. Tracy sells the plans.

You know, I always shied away from the NWG plans. But I really want to do this right the first go and way to many people upgrade from the grizzly to make me consider it. I'm a tinkerer by necessity, but I just might look into the NWG. Plus, cost is very much an issue and if I get the bare bones without all the bells and whistles, I could easily keep it under $1,000.

Check out the 2x72 grinder thread in the for sale forum. Its lengthy but read all of it. I believe that it is a more substantial grinder than the NWG not that there anything wrong with the NWG.

Good luck

That grinder kit is garnering a lot of attention, including mine. I feel that tickle in the back of my mind which I know is really just my sub-concious trying to scope out a spot for it in my workshop. Would look good next to my Coote, no?
The # of folks in line for the kit appears to be growing pretty long. This may be a very popular unit.

Info for the original OP.

The grinder kit in the for sale thread that we are speaking of is based loosely off a Bader 3. But is set up to take KMG attachments.
The big difference beside the being able to take the KMG attachments is going to be the over all weight of the eerf grinder (the name of grinder kit) made out of half inch plate and with solid steel tool arm should give you added mass and therefore less vibration giving you a smoother running grinder which in turn better grinds. The NWG is a good grinder and I was looking at building one too, is made from mostly 1/8 tubing which should be lighter. Also the NWG doesn't take the KMG tooling arms. This isn't huge but for some its a big deal.

What ever your choice good luck

Jake

Oh well... if weight is going to help, mine is going to end up as a great grinder just by this fact... the base plate alone is 40kg right now XD XD. I will post pictures when done.

The KMG has a solid tooling arm which weighs a ton. It eats up vibration from the simple fact it has serious mass. Most of the homemade kits have hollow arms. While a stout tube is mostly as stiff as a solid, it takes mass to resist acceleration...

The heavy base plate will be nice because it will help damp motor vibration, but Rob had the right idea with the massive arm.

I was in the exact same boat as you no more than a month or so ago...I went for the NWG and it has been doing real well. It was a very fun project so don't let it scare ya.

here's mine
