Hi all,

Just thought you all might get a kick out of this story. This last Saturday I had a group of cub scouts and their leaders/parents come up to where I work on Maui to do a community service project(I work at a Environmental Education Non-profit), where they would be helping us clear out non-native vegetation in order to re-plant native plants----yep, that's right, I volunteered to work this day as I know an opportunity to get the 20" AK out of the scabbard when I see one! Anyway, the scouts job was to clear small weeds and rocks away, while I and the other adults cut down trees ranging in size from 1" to 12".
I was supervising the work project and so for the first 1/2 hour I just got everyone their tools etc.. Finally I got a chance to put the 20" AK to work--there was a 12" Kukui Nut tree (soft to medium on hardness scale) that needed to go, and I quickly moved over to it and unsheathed the big AK. One of the dads said "whoa, you're gonna cut down that tree with a knife brah?" I just laughed and said "I'm gonna try". Well, about 15-20 whacks later the tree was down and I had a crowd of cub scouts AND adults crowded around watching me cut. Honestly, I got kind of into the cutting and didn't realize they were there until my hand tired and I looked up. Then the adults barked at the kids to get back to work. Pretty soon I had 3 of the adults asking "what can I cut to help you out you look tired"

Funny how the AK just makes people want to help cut down trees! Anyway, as it has plenty of times since I got it, the AK has made hard work fun. And there isn't any higher praise that a tool can get IMO.
(Needless to say the AK didn't show any signs of wear even when I cut through a root and slammed a lava rock(hard but not granite hard) full force.)

Bet this makes ya want to cut something don't it??

Great story!

Yeah, you're right, makes me want to chop something. But also makes me want to be in Hawaii!

Yea, but wouldn't the blunt end of an old rusty hatchet do a better job? (LOL) I feel sorry for the folks that have not come to appreciate the true beauty and utility of the Khuk. With its many different sizes, styles and weights, there aren't many jobs that are outside of its scope. Happy chopping, and try not to grin TOOO big when you pull that critter out of the sheath

Nothing soothes the nerves like a sharp knife in hand...

Somehow this great story reminds me of Tom Sawyer had to paint fence... It was a tough job for him, but at last all his friends came to await his turn.

Good call Wrongfriend. I have experinced similar effects with my khuks. Everywhere I go I tell the glory of Himalayan Imports.

I'm sorry guys but my machette can outchop any khukuri, so can my SAK. So can my steak knife and my hatchet. Oh, my fork too. And I don't even have to proove it. hehe

Seriously, they are great choppers.

Last week I took my khukuri to clear some Maple saplings around the property of my neighbor's son. He was impressed with its performance, and after a while he wanted to try it. He ended up chopping down the rest of the saplings. MauiRob's right on the point about khukuris making work fun.
