Is there a maker out there that has a line of folders around $200(+/-)?

My wife says I am 'owed' a knife, so I am taking advantage;) . I Prefer liner locks or framelocks, but I am open to suggestions. I know $200 is a little low for a custom, but I figured I would ask before I drop it on a production knife.

$200 is insanely low for a custom folder. Those are 1986 prices from Pat Crawford, Russel Easler and Mel Pardue.

IF you bump it up to $300, you are in the hunt......but $400 will give you more options, like Obenauf, Pardue, Morris.....

You CAN get a Model 1 F-B from P.J. Tomes for $225.00, but my experience with him and this knife left a bad taste in my mouth. There was play front-to-back, and he offered no recourse other than to "send it back". Believe me, my friend, you can get a virtually flawless factory folder for a lot less than $225.00.

My recommendation is to save your money, and savor that folder when you get it!

I don't follow the prices of custom liner locks much, but there are some decent custom slipjoints readily available in the price range you mention.

Don't know much about the maker or the knives, but there are a couple of custom folders (including a frame lock) by Les Voorhies here.

I also own a nice frame lock by Ray Rogers that was in the $200-300 range. That was several years ago, so I'm not sure what his prices are these days. Here's a pic of the Rogers Companion folder I own. It has a few nice features like a recessed mount for the pocket clip, integral bolsters, and dovetailed Tan G-10 scales.

Actually Don, I wouldn't call Ray's knives readily available anymore. Though they are definately one of the best deals in custom slipjoints around, I would guess an order from Ray with specific requests for handle material etc. would take at least a year or more. I know a short, bald guy that buys (and has) a lot of them though:D

And no AWGunS, Ray doesn't have a website, but you can find his knives on various dealer sites in the $300-$400 range.

Seriously, there is a guy in St. Louis that is putting out some fine slipjoint knives. Right now he only make a couple of small patterns, but what he makes is very very nice. His name is Mike Alsdorf, again no website. I'll try to dig up a picture or two tomorrow.

Bob Ham :)
Hand made custom slipjoints with stag/bone/wood and lined lanyard hole $150

Many lightly used frame or liner locks pop up now and then on the for sale threads at reasonable prices. But ya got to be Johnny on the spot for the good deals.

Bob Ham delivers great bang for the (under $200) buck$$...but they are slipjoint folders.

Does Mr. Cover have a website? Would like to check out his wares.

No website, but there is a nice clip point of Ray's on AG Russell's cutting edge site presently. Looks pretty sweet.

Thank you gentleman. I am going to look over your suggestions.

Next weekend there is a show in Dover, Ohio that I am going to attend. Maybe I'll luck out and find a deal there. I am not lucky enough to get the deal here (at least not quick enough).

Forumite Todd A Davison (username I think is bigal2me?) was offering very nice looking slipjoints around that price point up till a few months ago.

Lately, what we've been seeing from him is higher-end materials (mammoth ivory, etc), and correspondingly higher price tags.

I wonder if you contacted him, if he'd do something simpler?

His feedback has been pretty dang good!

Don't forget Dick Atkinson. Every time I see him at a show his table is full of folders in that price range, and they are well built, totally custom, fully functional users.

I have to second the vote for Todd Davidson I have two wonderful pieces from him and hope for a couple more. One is a wood and ATS34 slippy that was near your price point. The second was an Elephant Ivory and Damascus piece of art (it was slightly more expensive). Steven

John Greco.

You can get one of his fully custom folders for less than $200. He offers some of the toughest folders in the business (0.2" blade thickness).

Another option is one of Nihiser's tactical's on newyorkcustomknives site. I've never used this site or have I owned a Nihiser but I have read excellent comments on his work.

I was doing a search looking for a Nihiser Redemption a few weeks ago and came across this site and these 2 folders at under $300. His newer knives are in the $400-500 range from what I have seen.
