$200 to spend on folder....suggestions?

You asked for comments on Emerson, the wave is defitely a nice feature but I have found Emerson to be hit or miss quality wise. I have owned a couple of good ones and at least one truly lousy one. I wouldn't buy one unless I could handle it first.
I would buy a Spyderco, for general utility then it would be a para-mili or if you want bigger then the full size mili. The manix is getting rave reviews but I haven't played with one. I wouldn't spend two hundred bucks on an edc work knife. Also Microtech is worth looking at, some very nice manual action folders that might fill the bill though you will probably spend more then with spydie or BM. My BM rec would be the ritter grip which is around 125.00
One final recommendation, cold steel voyagers, available in a number of sizes, the four inch might work wellin a couple of different blade shapes. these are excellent, big strong sharp folders that cost around fifty bucks apiece. Get two and spend the 100 left over on well something else cool.

I have three knives on my "must have" list: Al Mar SERE 2000, Benchmade 520 and Spyderco Manix. Thus far, I've managed to buy the Al Mar and the Manix so I'd suggest the BM 520. Then let me know how you like it. :D

You should be happy with any of the knives mentioned here. Let us know what you get, OK?

Absolutely. I'll throw something together with pics and impressions....then follow up after some time with it at work.

I'm still struggling a little...so many good choices....so far I've narrowed it down to:
Manix
BM 630 Skirmish
BM 5000 Presidio auto
Sere 2000

I'll advise.

Thanks again for all the help.

Gotta say I was in the same boat as you and I went with the Manix. It feels fantastic ergonomically, and imo, thats the most important aspect of a knife. The blade's s30v too, and according to our good friend Cliff that frequents the baords, has one of the strongest locks around.

yep, gotta say I'm leaning heavily toward the manix right now. Have pretty much eliminated the 5000. Would love to find a side-by-side comparo of the skirmish and the manix.

Anyone? Bueller?

Spyderco Lil' Temperance. Very nice and easy to index, but not that concealable. Only good one I own.

Another idea would be the Manix or Military, as I've only heard good things about them. Only handled them.

Benchmade makes several good, large strong folders. Their smaller stuff is good too.

Good luck, and thanks for your service.

Though I'm pissed off at Microtech lately, they make, or at least, made some very good knives.

For LE work, an auto can have advantages, easy opening and closing, plunge locks are actually not such bad locks and don't suffer from the problems many liner locks can. So, for well under $200, a MT UMS, good size S30V blade and it should hold up well.

In a non auto, I really like the Microtech SOCOM manuals with the Microbar, which is a very thick leaf type liner lock, but it's very well done. Also well under $200, especially in the secondary market.

I carry my spare patrol car key on my Leatherman Wave, in a sheath on my duty belt. I use it more on duty than any other blade I have carried, tightning battery clamps on cars, tightening screws, loosening screws, etc.

I carry an ATR (Spydie) on strong side pocket & Native on left.

I don't have a Manix, but I do have the Skirmish. While I LOVE the Skirmish, I wouldn't carry it just because its hard for me to close without a cut-out for accessing the lock bar. The Manix, OTOH, is a Lockback from Spyderco. I don't think anything makes more sense then a Lockback from Spyderco just because they are so easy to open and close. Just depress the lock bar with the index finger, let the blade fall closed a bit, and close on your leg (that's at least what I've always done w/Spyderco lockbacks that I've had). Easy pleasy. Of course I carry Emersons now, but that has NOTHING to do with the quality of the Spyderco product.

Sincerely,
Anthony
