2002 Improvements for the Emerson Commander

This year, Emerson Knives has made some minor changes to their Commander model. They are:

Widened the back end of the handle, from the finger recess on back to the butt tip. This creates a fuller feel in your hand compared with the older Commanders.

Redesigned liner lock bar - the lock bar is wider and shorter. The angle at which it engages the tang has been changed, making it engage with more authority for a stronger lock up.

Machined traction grooves on the handle spine and near the butt of the handle

Thumb ramp on blade spine has a slight curve to it, for a more comfortable purchase with your thumb.

Thicker diameter stop pin

Blade grinds - gone is the swedge grind, which leaves full stock thickness up to the blade tip. For those who have a Mach-1, this is the similar type grind.

Longer handle spacer for more lateral rigidity.

The six micro screws that held the G-10 to the liners are gone. This cleans up the appearance of the handle, leaving only 4 screws inserted into the rear of the handle in a staggered position like that of the SARK/PSARK models.

Overall, the difference in the handle redesign is very apparent when you grip the '02 Commander in your hand. Little things do mean a lot. A great folder is made even better!

Here is a scan. On top is a '02 Commander SF GH, bottom is a '99 vintage with a CrN coated blade. You can see a slight difference in the handle profile here.

Well... I like the handle improvements... and I like the shouldered blade grind...
However, I think the redesign of the top-swedge stinks! :p

Not something that will keep me from buying a second Commander someday... but I just dont think it looks as good as the original.
Just my dos pesos

Purdy cool overall tho! :D

But I would still like to see those thicker liners like on the 98's

Great Dex!
Looks great! Something else to add to my "drool list"!
Still have not figured a "good" way to get stuff shipped down here! :barf:

I'm not sure, they might. Over at the "other forum", someone posted pics of a proto of the SC.

I like what I see in the new Commander. Even the blade looks fine to me. I think that green G-10 looks smashing.

Thanks...great comparison...appreciate the information...

I think that EKI has been listening to the masses and has attempted to address concerns. The improvements are positive, but what's up with that swedge?:barf:

With that said, I probably still want one.:D

Nimrod - they did away with the swedge to leave full stock thickness up to the tip. Stronger blade design.

I would have preferred that the micro screws be left intact. I think this would compromise ever so slightly the structural integrity/ rigidity of the handles as a whole. But the larger diameter stop pin is a plus.

Hi Nakano - Don't forget the longer handle spacer and the change of spacer material from plastic to G-10. These should add to the rigidity of the handle.
