Time for a new thread. The old one is too long. I think we are all pretty well in agreement that a Schrade scrimmed by Frank would be the best of the best. Phil has taken on the task of trying to locate enough scrimmable knives....but how many is enough?. He's located a few LB7 but not nearly enough.

The information needed to complete this task is a firm figure of how many knives are needed. If you already have an LB7 or similar knife, then good; we need to know that for Frank's purpose. If you need one, we need to know that as well. To assemble all this information, it needs to go to one place. Let's please try to get this information all in and assembled by say April 20th. I'm guessing that the cost will be $50.00 or less but that's a guess so I'm in the position of asking for your commitment semi blind.

Please email me direct at pfl@cebridge.net and I will gather the info for Phil as far as quantity to purchase and then for those of you who already have a dedicated knife the quantity to scrim.

Thanks

Paul

Edited to add: EVEN IF YOU DID RESPOND TO THE PREVIOUS THREAD, PLEASE EMAIL ME AS THE EMAIL LIST I RECEIVE AS A RESULT OF THIS THREAD WILL BE THE ONE AND ONLY OFFICIAL LIST.!!!!!

keep them coming, gents. I am still seeking platform knives, if you know of anyone with a stock of these things, let me know.

I do keep seeing them on ebay. Just don't bid against one another!

Hello all,
To answer the question about using other patterns, I would prefer to utilize the 502SC and 507SC as they have good field size for scrimshaw artwork. Smaller patterns would not be conducive without altering the artwork and changing ratios.

As to the cost, well, $50 is just going to cover the cost the blank, shipping it to me, and shipping it back to you plus insurance both ways with a small amount of money left over. I need to forewarn all of you this will not be a cheap knife. Each knife will be hand done and is very time consuming. To give you an idea, the time involved in creating these knives will be in excess of 100 man hours. This is not a production knife. Creation costs are not spread among thousands of knives. The creation cost is being split among an estimated 50 knives. I was not planning on skimping on any aspect of the artwork. So, if you are planning on purchasing this knife “blind”, I do not want you to be surprised. I am estimating the final cost of each knife to be around $120 including insurance and shipping both ways. Assuming the cost of the blanks is around 25-35 dollars. So before you commit, please realize the cost and the time element it will take to create these knives.

I would have preferred to show you an example first, but I was trying to delay talking about cost until you could see what you were getting for the money. I will not have an example ready for a few weeks.

The artwork is still only sketches and ideas. We have not even discussed what scrimshaw scene you would like on the knife. My father and I have kicked around some ideas that we feel is good. But we can also accept suggestions.

Phil, email me at tgio@warwick.net

Thanks for the heads-up Tom. That sounds like an outstanding value to me. I already emailed Paul that I'm in -- mainly interested in the folder.

Tom, Paul,

That sounds great. I'm still 'in'.

Thanks,
Glenn

Tom,
It is hard for most of us to realize the time that goes into making a knife. Until I started making some knives I had no idea of the cost of material and the time involved.
I used to look at handmade knives and think; "How does he justify the cost for a $350.00 knife?"
Now I look at them and think; "Only $350.00? I wonder where he cut the corners?"

I am sure Scrimshawing is like knife making, if it is good, it takes a lot of time.

We really appreciate you and your father doing these knives.

Guys...
The platform knives have become a real pain to try and get together. It's beyond me. Several of you have sent me emails from various ebay sellers offering SC507s with 'scratched' bolsters'. Well, they got their stock the same place I went to get what I could... and the photo is shown below. The one you see in the top right hand corner has been cleaned, the bolsters sanded by hand (400 grit, then 600), steel wooled, then polished on my buffer. Total man hours: 3-4 And the results are not perfect; we wouldn't be offering Mr.Giorgianni the perfect canvas he deserves for his work. My cost for the experiment: $170.00.

At this point, I am at a loss...

Phil

Perhaps Paul knows a custom maker close to him in Texas who would be willing to do a good job of cleaning and polishing on less than perfect knives for a nominal fee. I have a feeling that it would not be a problem, or time consuming to a person equipped with the right tools, knowledge, and experience. Just another thought.
