Well, I have been discussing with the spousal unit about the commute that I have for training (300 miles round trip) and then the upcoming daily commute from the Cape to Boston, and my truck (It is a Ford F-250 SD,diesel). I was wanting better gas mileage and frankly a smaller truck. Well, today we traded in the F-250 for a 2006 Toyota Tundra double cab, Limited, with the TRD package. It is Spectra Blue Mica! I DID test drive a Ford F-150 Lariat, 4x4. (Now mind you, I have been a dyed in the wool FORD fan for YEARS!) Then we test drove the Tundra!! I was in love!! This truck blew the F-150 out of the water in every area!! I am REALLY happy with it! I have NEVER had a NEW YEAR start out as amazing as this one has!! And, it is only gonna get better!!

I love the Ford trucks, especially with the new interiors. But you're right, if you don't need the cargo capacity, heavy suspension, and diesel-powered torque, a 250 diesel is a waste of fuel. Especially since the diesel models cost more and diesel fuel costs more. I don't care for diesels at all anyway, and I rarely carry anything heavy, so a 250 would only mean a rougher ride.

Congrats on the new truck!!

Just curious, how did the new Nissan V8 trucks compare to the Toyotas and Fords?

Out in the gasfield Fords are the most common, but there are a few Chevys also. I've seen exactly one guy using the Nissan. AFAIK, no one uses a Toyota out there as a work truck.

Nope, I got it from Hyannis Toyota. I don't like the looks of the Nissan Titan, I think it is fugly. I didn't want to bother to drive the thing. The 4.7 iForce V8 felt more powerful than the 5.4 from Ford, and felt like it had more low end torque.

Off to Gadgets & Gear. ;)

Hi TheKnifeCollector-

Congratulations on your excellent purchase! I wasn't a fan of trucks until I became a homeowner in a semi-rural location. There is a HUGE difference between being an apartment dweller compared to being out in the country a bit...especially with more ice and snow due to higher elevation. A 4 x 4 truck is dang near a necessity at this point!

I've been considering the following models somewhat similar to your choices:
  • Ford F-150 Lariat SuperCrew
  • Toyota Tundra or Tacoma Double Cab
  • Nissan Titan or Frontier Crew Cab
I like the fact that I can keep certain things neat, clean, and dry simply by placing them on the backseat inside the cabin without any hassle. I also like the idea of being able to haul bulky/dirty things like mountainbikes full of mud in a rack fastened inside the bed rather than folding down seats in my car.

What are your guys feelings with regard to "smaller" pickups like the ones I've described above as compared to their "full-sized" siblings? Is it overkill to opt for the F-150, Tundra, or Titan if I don't fill the bed to capacity on a daily basis? Is it wiser to select the larger trucks purely from a resale value point-of-view? One of the things that bugs me about the smaller versions is that they don't offer nice options like factory leather and really nice stereos...almost like they're trying to maintain a bargain pricepoint.

Your help and suggestions are sincerely appreciated! This post has perfect timing!

The F-150 is an excellent truck, until you sit in and drive a Tundra. And I used to be a dyed in the wool, die hard Ford fan!! I was shocked!! I found myself thinking anout the Tundra as my saleman was going over the figures he had come up for the Super Crew Lariat. I told him thanks very much for his time, but I wanted the Tundra! I LOVE the looks of the new Tacoma's. Do yourself a favor and drive all the trucks that you are interested in. I was only interested in the Tundra and the F-150. The Taco is too small for me, as is the Frontier. But, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the ones you are thinking about!! I LOVE the Limited package AND the TRD package on my Tundra!

Congratulations on your new "Yota"! Methinks that you'll probably never buy another Ford again, after driving this one. Imagine, if you will, a vehicle that actually starts and runs everytime you turn the key! That's what you normally get with a Toyota. Can't usually say that about Ford products though. At least, that's been my experience. I had one of the first Tundras, from the first year made, and loved it. My only complaint was that the V8 didn't get super great gas mileage(15-19, at best), but what V8 does?

Now, I drive a 2005 Toyota Tacoma. I got this truck, because the factory wouldn't let me order the Tundra with the new 245 hp V6 like I wanted(too late in the year). So, I "Settled" for this awesome, gorgeous dark metallic blue Tacoma that has the exact same 245 hp V6 in it. :) I'm getting better gas mileage than my Tundra did(19 city, 21 hwy), and have enough power to blow most cars off the road.

The Tundra is one nice truck, if you're into that sort of thing;) . Eventhough I own and love my Chev, the Big Three have to be getting quite scared as the Japanese are really starting to knock them out of their comfort zone; the full-size truck market. I won't even take one out as I know it will ruin the joy I take in getting into my truck. Congrats, and I hope it serves you well. Who am I kidding, I know it will serve you well!

I've never met anyone that was disappointed with a Toyota after they bought it. I know that some have not bought because of price or "its boring" but you can count on them. (Hondas too).

Did you check out the Honda Ridgeline? Its not a "truck" truck like the Tundra, but was interested to hear from anyone who's actually tried it.

I KNOW I will NEVER have another Ford product again!! After driving my Tundra, they don't make anything that comes close it!! I drove the 06 F-150 Super Crew, 4x4, Lariat first. I had already been to the Toyota dealer, and the salesman that we bought our Solara convertible from wasn't there, but said he would come back at noon.(It was his day off by the way. We both liked how well he treated us when we bought the Solora, that we were definately buying MY truck from him!!) Test drove it, liked it. Mind you, I have been driving a 4x4 F-250. The seats were hard, and the bed was short!! Then, I got in the Toyota (it is funny, I said that I had a suspicion that I would like the Toy better.), and I was in love!! The seats, man, oh man, they caress you!! We both just LOVED everythign aboout the Tundra!! There are a few minor things that I miss, but overall, this is a FAR superior truck!! Fit and finsh, the details..... The power!! The 5.4 felt like a dog! The 4.7 felt much more powerful, and felt like it has more low end torque. Anyway......... I hate the Honda Ridgeline!! That is NOT a truck! It is based off a mini-van platform, and will NEVER call it a truck!!

Did you try out the Ridgeline? I know that you hate it, I'm just wondering if you tried it. I really like our local Honda dealer, my wife just bought a Pilot and I'm having all kinds of trouble with my Ranger.

I went through the 'new truck bug' a while back, and didn't like the Honda Ridgeline's blind spot from the sloping bed wall.

Is that a similar problem on the Chevy Avalanche? I assume that the Ridgeline is just like the Pilot, which is nice, but no truck.

The Tundra is definately the top of its class. The only problem I have heard about them from mechanics I have worked with is that they have sludge buildup problems around the camshafts. The problem may have been fixed by now, but it still takes a lot to kill a 'yota

I wish so much that the Tundra's seats were higher off the floor of the cab. I test drove it and knew immediately I would never be comfortable in it after an hour so I bought another Chevy truck. I have an old skeleton and bad joints and I love to travel so comfort is a primary issue.

In 2005 Toyota was ranked #1 having the most satisfied car owners.
According to this, Toyota places 21st in vehicle satisfaction, one step above average. That's ahead of Ford, but behind Mercury and Lincoln. That's for their overall vehicle lineups though; I don't know of a pickup-specific study, but there probably is one.

Toyota places 7th in Initial Quality ( http://www.jdpa.com/awards/industry/pressrelease.asp?StudyID=984&CatID=1 ) and 7th again in the three-year Vehicle Dependability Study ( http://www.jdpa.com/awards/industry/pressrelease.asp?StudyID=996&CatID=1 ).
