Question for anyone that knows the answer...

I just got a new 2007 110 and the leather sheath seems to be made out of a very stiff cardboard-like leather...unlike the 2006 leather sheath which was a bit softer and not as perfectly smooth.

Is this bonded leather or is it genuine leather? It really seems kind of synthetic to the touch but otherwise looks okay from afar.

Thanks for any info.

Hmmm... Thanks but I still am not sure exactly what I have. It's a black sheath and I thought all the black sheaths were made of genuine leather. I guess it's possible that it just happens to be a very stiff example.

Has anyone purchased one recently (2007) that has the same type of sheath?

The last time I checked on this the answer I got was that we do not use bonded leather. I will ask again to see if there was a recent change.

I agree. The leather in the new sheaths is hard as a rock and even has a different smell as the old ones. The old sheaths are softer and smell like leather, whereas the new sheaths have a 'chemical' smell to them.

Yeahhhhh!!! I was going to post that next...my sheath smells very chemical like, almost like acetone. The sheath I got before this one definitely smells like leather. Maybe they are using a new process to make them?

The only thing that makes me think they are bonded is that there is almost no grain or texture at all... It almost seems like a smooth pressed sheet of leather.

A.P.F....is yours smooth as well or does it have some texture?

Aza, mine is sort of a matte, smooth texture, that is noteably different from my real leather sheath of a couple of years back.

10-4. Same as you described on my recent 110 APF. You can definitely feel the diff.

Yup, it's too bad, as I really like leather sheaths, but I won't touch another of those Mexican jobs. In fact, Pete was kind enough to change my Custom 110 order from a leather sheath to a Cordura one. There was no way that I could see the extra width of jigged buffalo scales, fitting into one of those rock hard leather sheaths.

I checked out another one made in 06 and it seems like real leather. The one that I think is bonded had an 07 tang stamp on the knife. It looks like the 07's either have bonded leather or a really new process of making the sheaths. The one way that I think you can probably tell looking through the package would be the hair/pore marks in the leather. The (bonded?) newer ones don't have any discernable hair patterns...meaning it is completely smooth almost like illustration board or cardboard. If you see anytype of texture or hair patterns, then you likely will get a real leather one.

Just my observation if it helps anyone in the future.

Agree with the Aza observation.
Just for the record, I have never used a stock leather 110 sheath since the horizontal nylons came out.

The Cordura sheath will allow a horizontal carry? If so, I think I'll order a couple more.

APF...
Have heard that NOT all of them do but I cannot confirm anything other than the two I have do permit horizontal or vertical.

My late production 2006 110 (I think the clampack said Nov 06?) has this new type of 'leather' sheath. Has anyone carried one of these new leather sheaths long enough to know if they soften with use like the old ones?

The Goose is right, not all nylon are both vertical/horizontal carry. And the numbers may not be a good indicator.

The 110 I just bought (no way for me to tell the year of manufacture, sorry) comes with the hard, black, chemical-smelling sheath. It's smooth, has one row of threaded black stitching, has 110 pressed into the bottom inch on the back of the sheath and BUCK over KNIVES on the flap. The snap is a subdued brass, and says "UNIVERSAL SK50" on the inside of it. There was a sticky, leather-like tab on the inside of the sheath right on the snap (where the knife would rest) so I took it off because it kept getting a gummy substance on my knife.
The knife fits snug into the sheath. A little too snug for my liking, but it seems to be breaking in. I know this is more information than was asked for, but I figured the more descriptive, the better. I paid $35 for mine (knife and sheath).

JNieporte...no, the detail is great. I think eveyone would like to hear more as to how it breaks in as well.

You can check the year of manufacture by looking at the blade of the knife and see what type of symbol it has after the 110. If you look at the picture next to Buckaholics name, you will see at T turned on its side. That is the symbol for 2006... If it looks like a chicken track, then it is a 2007 knife. If there is another symbol, you can look it up on the buck website.

Sorry it I'm telling you info you already know.

It looks like our Leather supplier will be meeting with us in about 2 weeks and I have been invited to attend. I will ask them about the sheaths when I see them. I can say that we have been using the same supplier out of Kansas for I dont know how long, many years.
So it will be a while but I should have an answer on this.

My 112 has a similar sheath- black leather, hard as a rock, stickered "Mexico". It's the one thing I don't care for; is there a Cordura sheath for it? I tried the sheath from my old 450 and it is way too big.
