So who is going to be testing for JS at the next Blade show?

Not eligable till 2010 but hope to be there root'n for ya. Besides don't think my work will be ready till 20??.

Ahhhhh.....sounds like a couple of you guys were a bit lazy/cheap about joining the ABS:D I joined March of '05 which was about a month after I put together my first little one brick forge and started destroying very expensive bars of precision ground O1.;)

Thats funny:D You dont have to forge precision ground steel :D
Go for it Joe. Youre ready.

I have to ponder spending money like that. I just bounce back and forth, join ABS,get Ferrari waxed? Join ABS get Ferrari waxed.? It's tough on all of us. Besides I only started forging a year ago.
Joe I think you'll make it. You do excellent work.

I hope to be testing in 2009. If everything works out right.

Dave from Diller

Is "get the ferrari waxed" a euphemism??? LMAO :D

Joe, maybe I should do it again for good measure :)

I highly recommend any of you thinking about doing it... go for it! I know there's some guys around here that like to get nasty about the whole thing, but I've had a very positive experience being a part of the ABS... and found the testing experience VERY REWARDING!!! :)

I have only been doing this for about a year and a half now. Joined the ABS in Jan of '07. Been going to Uncle Al's monthly meetings and soaking up all I can from the MS's there. Friend of mine at work is a JS and has helped me alot along the way, and his work is about as clean as they come. I just hope I can be half that good when before I take my test in or around 2010. Unless I decide to go to the ABS school then it may be sooner.

Well Nick, there is no Ferrari. Not at my house anyway.
I have made a few blades and done the performance test with them. Practice, is what its all about. I worry about the judging part. My fit and finish have a long way to go. I have heard many things about the test. Mr.Neely told me to make simple knives. Just make them very well. If you do such things as file-work, it will be judged. If you don't do any they can't find flaws in it. To me a simple well made knife is a thing of beauty. I notice that allot of new makers are adding embellishment to less than addiquit work. Shouldn't you get the basics down first. OH CRAP!!! I'm rambling. I think at the hammer-in there's a siminar on taking the test. Do's Do-nots and so on. My have to set threw it. Probably need to anyway.

You are correct, Nick.
Forget about the politics.
Just imagine it's yourself, your knives and the judges - no one else.
You are putting your best work that you are capable of out on the table to speak for themselves, to a group of professionals who have been around for a while.
To then discover that your efforts "pass muster" in the eyes of the Big Boys is very rewarding.

Thats funny, Erik. I thought you already were a JS. As for you, Mr. Wheeler, your signature line should say "Because being just good doesn't take long enough....":p

I'm not sure if I'm eligible in 10 or 11... won't be ready until 20 or 30. I wish all of y'all luck though as we work to improve the craft.
