The 2012 CKCA Club Knife will be a Loveless Style Boot Knife by noted CKCA Knifemaker-Member Charles Vestal.

My apologies for the delayed post, Charles has been ready to rock since 2011, but I needed to clear out some time in order to efficiently manage this project.

There will be 13 CPM-154 blades of 4 3/4" length available to CKCA members. These have been sent off for heat treat, cost is $500 each, including a Charles Vestal made leather sheath. Each knife will include a sheath from Charles, if you want a sheath from another source, there will be no discount, and you will have to work out that sheath request on your own.

Handle material is black, green or burgundy micarta, with wood handle options as provided by collector, and approved for use by Charles, no guarantees as to suitability(ie shrinkage) If you send a piece of green/less than ideal wood to Charles and he uses it, and it moves, NO guarantee will be in effect, and you will have to negotiate for a new handle with Charles, should he be amenable.

Guard and furniture will be stainless steel. Thad Buchanan graciously provided Charles with a pattern from the Loveless Shop that this knife will be modeled from, and Charles may post up some representative photos quite soon.

Orders for this knife will be opened up next Saturday(2/4/12) in order to give every one a chance. I will indicate that the ordering status is ACTIVE, and it will be first come, first served by date stamp in the appropriate CKCA s/f. PM's WILL NOT be accepted as a legitimate order. Ordering will open at 9:00 am PST, so everyone will have a chance. Money will be due when the knife is completed, Charles and I will work out payment options.

First deliveries should be at the CKCA Banquet on Thursday, June 7 at The 2012 Blade Show.

We will attempt to match up serial numbers from Karl Anderson's CKCA project so collectors have access to the same serial number, should they want it.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

that is quite an amazing deal. Just check out Charles' website to see what I mean, the man makes very fine knives!
Yet another compelling reason to support CKCA by becoming a member:thumbup:.

Great choice of maker and knife. It would be nice to see a representative image of the intended design.

I would like to thank Steven and the CKCA for allowing me to make the 2012 club knife. I am looking forward to the process.

Here are a couple Boot knives I've made in the past. The pattern Thad sent me is a little different but pretty close. Thanks Thad!

Great knife selection and great choice of maker. I own a couple of Charles' knives and this is a great opportunity to grab another one.

This is awesome, I'm so glad Charles is doing this year's knife. Thanks for putting this together.

A BIG THANKS to Charles for creating the CKCA's second "Club Knife" and for offering them to our membership at such a favorable price.

And also to Steven for doing a great job in putting this project together and managing it.

We will post some photos of the actual knives as they are being completed. As stated they will vary slightly from those above as an actual Bob Loveless boot knife pattern is being used. Charles' beautiful Ironwood example above was made for the first CKCA Mini-Knife Show in June 2009.

Those samples look great.

I have a question about handle material. Does wood need to be stabilized to be "suitable".

Thanks,
Peter

Hi Peter,

It all depends on what type of wood you have in mind. Ironwood, Blackwood, Cocobolo and a few others wouldn't need to be stabilized but they need to be cured well.

Softer woods will need to be stabilized.

Take care

Charles

Thanks for the fast reply Charles.

I have some slabs of highly figured wood such as cocobolo, zebrawood, etc. Not sure how they were cured, but I have had them for quite a few years. They seem to have been cured carefully and have a waxy substance protecting the end grain.

Also, what dimensions are needed.

Thanks again,
Peter

Peter,

Sounds like what you have has been cured enough..

The Zebrawood might need to be stabilized, all I have seen is pretty soft and doesn't finnish very well.

1 1/2" x 5", 3/8" thick scales are more than large enough.

I think we may be getting ahead of ourselves with all this excitement :D

This concept seems like a real winner to me.....but sadly, I believe there will be MANY more than 13 people interested :p

I'm sure Charles will be able to handle anything the lucky "winners" may desire......

Good luck, everyone.....as long as I get one!

One of our members contacted me today with a good question. He was wondering if this thread is where you post your desire to purchase a Club Knife, and it's NOT. CKCA Members have to post to the simalar thread on the CKCA Forum.

Steven just duplicated his CKCA thread here as we always like to keep the knife community abreast of what we are doing. And we certainly appriciate Blade Forums always allowing us to do this.

Please also note that orders will start at 9:00am PST on Saturday.

Good thread, STeven !
This will be a very cool knife regardless of handle material.

Best of luck to all the prospective contestants.

EXACTLY right Bill. I realized 12:00 PM on Saturday does not allow me a fair chance to order as I will be at our annual Ridercoach meeting and will more than likely not have access to the internet. :(

I'll probably not be around for this so good luck to everyone. If, for some reason, I do get lucky I'11 be hunting down some of the Spalted Hackberry that I've seen Steve Johnson and Bill Ankrom using.
