Hey all, just thought I would give you all a heads up on the start date for the 2nd annual BladeForums Mini Knife KITH! Hard to believe it has been a year already, and with the success of last year I hope it is even bigger!

The official start date will be April 1, 2012. Of course, you don't have to wait until then to start practicing, but now is a good time to start saving those bits and scraps from the garbage!

Here is a link to last years photo thread, hopefully it gets everyone excited again!

Thanks again to last years participents, and let's hope this gets bigger this year!

Also, feel free to use this thread for chit-chat about the KITH and also any questions you may have. Ideas, materials, and methods are always encouraged to share!

Stacy, your participation is always a big boost to getting more people and better knives in the KITH! You provided excellent help to me last year with the organizing and just generally keeping an eye on things, so you shouldn't have to help much at all this year! I learned a ton from our conversations off line. Please feel free to email me any concerns or comments.

When is the due date? I'd like to participate but I don't have much time. Maybe I could do a little here and there if I start early enough.

Patrice, I think July 1 will be tentative date, but no sooner than that. Gives three months of working time, four if you start now.

yeah... due date? I'm a little intimidated to be honest. I won a raffle/door prize in Washington a few months back and my prize was a Rusty Polk Mini-Bowie. It has a twist damascus blade with a swedge, Green Mammoth ivory scales and has a distinct quench line.
Here it is to get everyone excited.

I wondered how he got a quench line in such a small blade and can only think he used a heat sink on the spine?

My hesitation is that I fear not being able to pull off the quality of the scale Rusty did on this knife. And, not having the time to get into the shop....

I'm in!!!! WooHoo, I am actually excited about this one. I see the mini kith from last year on my watch/jewelery box on the dresser everyday. Not sure what I'll do this year, but I'm thinking about it now!

I think i'm gonna give this a try also. Last years kith's looked great!

Patrice, hope to see you at the finish line!

Don't forget fella's, this is just a courtesy reminder before the official start and "I'm in" thread.

Brian, that is a fantastic little knife! But if any of us didn't try anything new because we were afraid of failing, we sure would be very far in life! Give it a shot! No harm, no foul in entering and not finishing. Happens all the time. Try out a few in mono steel and if you want later, make one damascus. We'll see you at the end!

Charles, I know the feeling! I have even used mine and some other minis I have to open the occasional letter! Did you ever get that katana finished you had going after the KITH last year?

Good to have you with us Greg, its been a while since your last mini! What's it gonna be, a larval dragonfly? Lilliputian pin-up girl? :D

I already have some ideas and the wheels are turning!

I am tentatively in. No promises, but I will do my best. Does it have to be a knife, or just something sharp?

I am excited to do another mini!!! Not sure what i will do, but it will blow away the one i did last year for sure!!!

Also can't promise anything right now but I'll do my best to have one ready. Never done one before so don't expect too much.

Patrice, i see a very elegant, carved mini in your future :D I think you will enjoy it, it is really a fun thing to do.

I did mine. I think it adds a little bit more realism and useability to them, plus you can almost do it with a lighter lol.

Mike, the plan is for a Damascus mini Kukri. What dictates the size on these? Any minimum size to be considered a mini?

I think it is a 1/4-1/5th scale? I am sure Xander will get more specifics up soon. I am actually going to start my few ideas here soon, i think i am making 5-6 and will choose what i think is the best one lol. Don't fool your self though, i think it is every bit as hard as a full size knife, just...well, smaller lol.

Mike, I can't wait to see what you come up with, but maybe you should start it now so its done a little before the deadline?!

s2f - yes, they should be heat treated, I did mine with just a plumbers torch and a paper cup of canola oil. The knives really should be full functioning scale models of a full sized knife. I believe Charles, zaph1, even sent his out to be sharpened by Richardj. Mine had a true through tang and guard with a real leather stacked handle.

Patrice - size is kinda up to you, but if you want a litte more clarification, here is the rules from last year with a short write up on what is a mini...
