Ok I'm in. I just sketched up a little battle axe, is that still acceptable this year? Also if I wanted to do some engraving do you have any crafty little inexpensive mods to anything around the shop to engrave something not so elaborate into the steel with?

Well, Victrola record player needles make good fine point scribes for annealed steel, plus they're cheap. And yes, a battle axe is fine for this event. The rules will stay the same for what is allowed, I have no major changes planned for this year.

Another friendly reminder that the official start date is only 10 days away! I just finished proofing the rules and dates, Official deadline will be midnight west coast time, Sunday, July 1, 2012. I am excited to see this get going again! I don't know if I will do another stacked leather handle again this year (learned a lot on that subject...) but I will be sure to push my personal comfort zone even further this year! I will be doing some active recruiting this year as well, to hopefully get more participation. As always, you are not obligated unless you actually finish a knife. No harm in saying "I'm in," and not finishing one, it happens in every KITH. We all do have personal lives and other obligations.

OK, this is shameless. I am having a bit of computer trouble, and the computer budget is the same as the knife budget. my stock money went out the window. would anyone be willing to sell me a very small chunk of 1/16th steel? I will get it to size.

You got a plumbers torch, an old needle file and a 16oz ball pein hammer? You can forge out your own on the back "anvil" of a bench vise. I usually forge them down to around .040" or so and finish right around .028" - .035". You can forge it in open air, you don't need an enclosed forge for something that small. Get nice and hot and give it three fast smacks, they cool really quickly, and back to the heat, then two or three more. If your hammer is good you can get a nice finish right from there.

You can use a cheap $1 knife, a broken pocket knife blade, a worn out kitchen parring knife, a drill bit, broken needle file, file tang from a regular file, etc. For a piece of tiny knife steel, the sources are endless.

If there is a hobby shop around, they have "piano wire" which is usually 1095 or similar. It comes in all sizes, and forges and HTs well. One $1.50 piece will make dozens of minis. Many hardware stores have the same assortment. Check a Tru-Value.

Stacy, I'm curious about using old drill bits, never have before. What is a typical black oxide finished small drill bit likely made from? How well do they forge and HT? Also I have some broken Old Hickory knives with thin stock, are those 1095 as is often rumored?
