If you're really interested in this sort of thing do a google search for Terrence McKenna and his Timewave Zero concept. It put ancient chinese hexagrams of the I Ching in correlation with the Ancient Mayan Calendar (both lunar concepts I believe) to make the date 12-21-12 earmarked for an increase in novelty never before seen on earth. It is a mathematical formula that has been argued and changed. Who knows what the date is, but looking back at history with the Timewave Zero predicting novelty and what actually was occurring in the world, is pretty interesting. As a human, we all look for patterns in things and can probably find them in just about anything. It's a neat timeline, in that there was very little novelty during the dark ages but a whole lot of predicted novelty during the industrial revolution for example. The end of the world as we know it may just be China as the world power and not the good ole U. S. of A. It could be an alien invasion, it could be Jesus bringing us zion "as a thief in the night" or it could just be the end of the Mayan Calendar and its effect on society (remember Y2K?).
