2012 Traditional Forum Knife...use or not?

I have high hopes for the forum knife. It looks divine, but for me the proof of the pudding will be in how it carries and uses. If it uses as good as it looks, it will become my main squeeze. If it doesn't for some reason, it will go into my accumulation.

As you might derive from my above response, storing it away without carrying it is not a happening thing for me. YMMV. (Your Mileage May Vary.)

True, but I think GEC's solid hands-on build quality, on-going diversity of interesting materials and viable patterns (with very little of modern Case's toy-like Beanie Baby kitsch) and unusually small manufacturing runs make them fairly unique in today's market. Unlike modern Case (annual collaborations excepted), I think these knives have a real future as collectibles. That said, I'm not looking at them as investments, but rather as an affordable and (hopefully) financially stable way to enjoy traditional knife collecting without taking a hit down the road. Something that would be impossible if I felt inclined to use every knife I purchased.

There will be a BF traditional knife every year, though. These aren't a one time thing where it's the ONLY set of BF knives ever made. I think some kinds of knives can appreciate in value but most won't.

I'll use one, and put one up.

Campbell, this may be the most collectible BFC model yet, I'll reserve judgement until it's in my hands, but there is a premium paid for the one that Gus and I worked on (2009) and of the models produced before this one, seems to be the one that people really want.

You never know what is going to appreciate in value, and what is going to nosedive until you try to sell it.

That is a massive assumption...the BFC annual knives are brought to market by volunteers, and there are minimums to be met....if that stops working, there WILL be a lag one or more years. Maybe you can volunteer for the next year's knife to make sure that there is someone willing to see it through?

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I look at it like guns...some will appreciate and most wont, a slight gain is normal but you wont retire on the small margin you might get back. The BF knives are awesome, but to contrast with guns again this knife is no holland & holland side x side. ;)

Use and enjoy them...maybe one day gift it to someone who will truly respect the knife you used to use.

I haven't made up my mind yet but I probably won't use it just because of all the users I already have.

It will be used or sold at my cost or less. I don't buy new knives to collect and I don't buy with the intention of reselling for profit. Oddly there seems to be more interest in preserving knives made last week than knives that survived 100 years.

Ive noticed the same thing.

Would someone be able to tell me how these feel in hand? (Whenever you get them of course). I was very close to getting one of these but I passed because I was unsure how it would feel in hand when using the wharncliffe. Congrats to all that got one I hope they're great!

I'm guessing that for the next couple of weeks it will be difficult to find a thread in Traditional in which there is not some post that talks about the 2012 Forum knives.

I don't buy a knife that I don't intend to use. But I do have a few waiting for their first turn. It's getting used, but may have to wait until summer.

I have not carried a traditional since I was in high school. I got one of these to be a user and try carrying a traditional again and I really liked the overall knife. I picked it at Spark's shop last Friday and really like it. However, I don't think I am going to bring myself to use it. I think I will put it up and just be a "look what I got" piece as I have so many users already.

Im using mine...the only saft queens I have are old Japanese blades...and I mean 300 year + old
