I registered on this forum just to find out if my 2013 Buck 112 is special or not. I was browsing through a gun shop back in April who also carried a decent number of knives behind a counter. While looking I saw a Ranger 112 without a nail nick. I asked the guy to see it and after confirming there was no nail nick on either side I told him I would take one. He grabbed me a brand new one in a box and, I paid, and went to my car. I opened the box to discover the new one had the finger nick, so I went inside and told him I wanted the one on display without the nail nick. He simply exchanged me the knives and I was on my way home. Been wearing the knife a lot for since I bought it in April and love it. Several times now I have been online trying to find the answer to whether or not this knife is special since it's got the 2013 birth marks but no nail nick. If there are any serious collectors or buck enthusiasts reading this I would appreciate any help you can give me to figure out this mystery. Is this just a new option buck is offering? Is it a factory fluke which makes my knife rare? Anyone willing to comment about my knife would be greatly appreciated. I tried to post pics but I don't have a paid account or and imageshack account. Are there any other easy ways to post pics so you guys can see what I am talking about?

Thanks Gentlemen.

Hi Frankrb3,

Most likely it's an error that made it out of the factory (cool). Please send me a message with your photo's and I'll try to link them for you. Please note that you do not have to be a paid member to post photo's. But, you do have to use an image host like photobucket or imageshack.

It's not unheard of, odd tang stamps, missing date codes etc.... there are a lot of manual operations in the making of a knife so things happen. I have a knife that missed the sharpening step. Human beings are involved..... Interestingly, 112's did not originally have a nail nick. I think they were added about 1980 or 81. Of note to me in your report is that you traded the knife but not for the correct box. Boxes usually have a mfg date on the bar code label. It would have been nicer to have the correct original box for your knife. You were attracted to it because of the lack of a nail nick so it is certainly special to you.

DeSotoSky,

Thanks for the reply and insight. I assumed it was something along the lines of a manufacturing mistake. I was aware of the early 112s not having nail nicks which is what made me trade the knives when I found out the one the guy sold me had the nail nick. I knew it was probably unusual since I hadn't been aware of buck offering no nail nicks on new knives. As for the box, I did get the original. As soon as I got into my truck and was aware that the one the guy sold me was not nickless, I went straight back inside, handed him the box with the knife inside and said I wanted the one I looked at one display, which was sitting on top of it's original box. He checked the box to make sure it had the sheath and he simply reboxed the knife and handed it over. Markings on the box are 0112BRS-B Ranger. Cat.2632 02/02/2014. I paid $62.10 to the shop which unfortunately is located in Southern California. Wasn't even looking to buy a knife that day, but I couldn't pass up that ranger without the nail nick.

Hi Frank,

The email you sent me has not photo's. You need to save your jpg photo's to your computer as a file and then send me the file with your photo's in it.

Oregon, Good to see you back.
Yes, agree with the above posts. Factory woops do happen. So, rare, I don't know. Maybe. Different yes. DM

I like a plain, sterile, knife. The less adornment the better suits me often. My nails are shot a lot of the time anyway so I am used to pinching the exposed portion of the closed blade to pull it open.

Desert Dave, I have been trying to send you a piece of mail with an attachment without joy. Can you please ping me with regular mail so I can try again. Thank you.

Guys I am sorry but I cannot figure out how to upload these photos. I tried both photobucket and imageshack and both of these websites fail to allow me to create an account and I'm just not willing to pay for an account here just to share these few images. Any suggestions? JB4570 was going to post them for me if I could send them to him in a bladesforum message but theres no option for attaching photos to a message. Maybe a personal email address? ANyways I hope I can get these posted. I know it's nothing special, everyone has seen an older 112 without the nail nick but it's still cool if it's a factory fluke. Talking about it just isn't the same as seeing it. SOrry guys, but thanks for all your comments so far.

I have another question on it. Do all the 112 now come with that tumbled finish or what ever you call it or did this one miss another step in the process?

Should have a satin finish on the blade and a nail notch. Looks like you got one of the ones that should not have gotten out of here

Nice! The 112 is one of my favorites. I had an early one, 25 years ago, but wore it out on the whetstone... that steel was tough to sharpen but took a great edge. Didn't have a diamond hone back then.

Hey JB, thanks a lot for posting my pics for me. As for the finish on the blade, it appears to be a normal satin finish to me. The distortion comes from the angle I used to make the blade markings would show up in the light. If I used the lighting differently it would appear more normal. The knife sharpens and holds a great edge like it should which leads me to believe it was heat treated to spec. Only thing missing from this blade it the nail nick. Glad to finally learn that is a unique knife and not a new production model. Thanks again for everyone who helped me share these images with the other members on this forum.
