2013 Case/Bose Collaboration

I have two of Queens ATS34 knives. In no way are they comparable to the Case/Bose collaborations in fit, finish or quality of materials (i.e. steel liners vs. brass or nickle silver.) In addition, they are great designs, fluted bolsters, swedges, etc. but much more a "copy" of the old patterns than the Bose designs. Tony breaths new life into the old patterns, not Queen. You pay for the design as well as the materials. I don't own GEC but that's because I've never seen one that asked to be taken home. :) They don't float my boat, but I've handled plenty and they are no Case/Bose. The first Case/Bose I ever handled I wanted, but could not afford. So I waited. Never got that knife, but the ones I've found, in my price range, I've snapped up.

If the Case/Bose collaborations were so easy to execute and make tons of money, then why doesn't any other company do the same thing? The Queen collaborations with Pardue and Burke were no where near the Case/Bose level of quality and those efforts appear dead.

I agree with what you are saying here, especially "Tony breaths new life into the old patterns, not Queen. You pay for the design as well as the materials".

I would say this though about my own hands on experience with Case, GEC, and the Case/Bose Collabs.
The exceptional Case is on par with the average GEC.
The exceptional GEC is on par with the Case/Bose Collabs as far a F&F goes. The 2011 Forum knife of mine is the finest production knife I have ever held as far as F&F goes, but the Bose designs and materials used in the Case Collab knives are unmatched.
Expensive as heck, but in a league of their own.

I agree that the fit and finish of the Queen knives I have handled with the different steels are not as nice as the two Case/Bose Coffin Jacks that I have handled and the price more than indicates this. I will kindly disagree that the Case/Bose knives are far superior to any of the GEC offerings. I have only handled two Case/Bose, both Coffin Jacks and they were on part with GEC nor more. Might I have handled bad examples?

I have not handled any of the Case/Bose knives but if they are not any better than GEC f/f they are defiantly not worth the price. I have had several GEC and am not that impressed with them. They have nice handle materials but most of the ones I have had have had blade wobble more so than the standard Case line.

Definitley not the norm. More so the norm with Queen but for GEC its been a rarity. I have 27 GEC knives

The Case/Bose knives are also put together by hand like GEC knives so f&f can vary with each example.

I can't think of a custom maker the builds a Tony Bose design wharncliffe trapper for under 500$. I am looking forward to the stag one I have coming. This is not a "Does GEC build a better knife than the Case/Bose collabs" thread.

The Case/Bose Collaborations are what they are: unique. They use top materials no one else uses (154CM), they use the top designer no one else uses (Tony Bose), and they have great features no one else uses (rat-tail bolsters, extension springs, etc.). For the most part, their fit and finish is at or above the level of every other production slipjoint. They're gonna be more expensive. Only you can decide whether or not they are worth it. If Case sells all they make, then they are not overpriced. They may not be worth it to you or me, but they are not overpriced.

Sure, but there is still a question (for potential buyers in this conversation, for example) about whether the price for a production knife in this case (pun intended) is worth it, by comparison with custom options.

I have (thus far) owned four custom slip joints--Davison, Erickson, KR Johnson, and my latest, a Chamblin. None of them has cost me more (second hand, except for the Chamblin) than the previous Case/Bose collaborations, and all were hundreds of dollars less than the prices given for the 2013 WT. From where I sit, I'll take any one of those exceptional custom knives over the Case/Bose 2013. So for me, evaluating my options, this particular knife (which looks awesome, don't get me wrong) is not worth what they are asking, precisely because of the comparison that can be made with custom knives.

Cheers,
Daniel

I don't know why I'm complaining, I know I'll get one somehow. Kris, you are right. Jeff, you are 100% correct, Dan, you are as well. Thems the breaks, first world problems etc.

And meanwhile, to get back to basics, it's going to be an awesome knife.

This will likely be a huge hit due to it's size and utility. I don't know about the details yet of what handle materials will be offered, etc. All I know is what it's going to be. As the thread "evolves" I'm sure the other details will be filled in. This years collaboration, the Tony Bose 3 1/2" Wharncliffe Trapper.

Certainly looks to be a great knife, perfect size and my favorite blade combo. The price tag will keep it out of my reach but for those who can afford this beauty, grats and hope you enjoy it. :)

So true. And it looks like an awesome knife. Whatever I've said, I still want one!

Cheers,
Daniel

Kris

It definitely shouldn't be.

Found one at a brick and mortar for a great price. Very clean and sharp. Antique bone . Great way to start a vacation. Going to dinner once now ;).

What are you thinking of it now that you've had if a few weeks? I'd really like to have one in Ebony but I'd have to sell a few knives that I really like to be able to afford it....not sure if I'd want to go for one of these or spend a bit more for a full custom.

I did not receive my Lanny's Clip last year until first bit of Dec., put my order in mid May.

I haven't carried it outside the apt I was staying in, or outside the house when I got home, but I have been carrying it. I spent money I didn't have to get it, and am selling some other knives to pay for it. Great fit and finish, very sharp, I wish the blades were a little wider, but for a gentlemans knife, it is a great piece. I don't expect to treat it like I do my ebony Tribal Spear, which isn't that bad anyway. I need to take some pics, along with my other Bose collaborations. I can't tell you in good concience to get rid of knives to pay for it, but I will say it is a great knife. I wouldn't've gotten it if the prices are what I've seen from other online dealers.

I have gotten my collaborations the last few weeks of October to the first week of December.

my dealer is supposed to be getting mine this month....i spoke to him too early (before i found out how much they were going to be)& hes already got one set aside from me

takes away from my ken erickson fund
