2013 Forum Knife Motivation Thread (PIC HEAVY!!!)

As others have said, this style of blade just doesn't do it for me. I don't find the design aesthetically appealing, and it's definitely not the sort of knife I'd actually carry and use. As a comparative newbie to these forums, I kinda regret missing the forum Native and the Skyline from previous years, but most "traditional" knives like these just aren't my thing. They have to either look REALLY good to me(which, for a knife of this style, basically requires something blue/green and/or with damascus to get my attention), or be fairly cheap. This one isn't cheap(which is fine, I understand it's basically a custom, and I wouldn't mind paying this for a design I liked), and even if I thought it would look appealing to me(and based on the posted specs, it doesn't sound like it would), I'd STILL be wary about dropping $130 without at least a preliminary pic of what the final product would look like.

Just checking; do you know this is the traditional sub-forum? :)

I don't remember which thread I saw it in, but I do recall seeing pics of the GEC setup knife. No covers nor bolsters on that, but it's what the production knives would be made to. I think it looks great, just too big for me. The price is what it is. We don't know the costs involved, nor have any control over them, so it makes no sense to waste time on it. I voted until the knife was determined to be over 3.5". After that, I kept out of the voting as I knew I wouldn't be buying one. I don't think that the 140+ pieces already sold should be dismissed. At least order the knives that have been paid for. If Spark wants to front the cost of extras, that's entirely his call though.

(just my 2¢)

I do. OP was wanting more people to buy the forum knife-I was explaining some reasons why they might not be. A combination of it being a knife style that doesn't appeal to everyone, and the lack of ANY kind of picture/rendering of what the finished product will look like.

Gotcha. ;)

It was an open vote on every facet of the design. The majority won in each case.

Was this true with total length, master blade length, and the color of the handles? Just wondering if there was a vote on all three of these features. Seems like this year there was quite a bit less communication during the design phase.

For a thread that was intended to motivate folks to support the traditional community forum knife, this has sure taken a 180.

It's very disappointing. Everyone had a chance to voice their opinions on how this knife was designed, it was majority rule on all the design aspects. If you didn't get the chance, it's nobody else's fault. Price is price. Either support the knife with dollars or don't. Don't like how this years was done? Volunteer to run the next one (if there even is one).

It's very sad that there is a bunch of bickering about something many people were nice enough to put in a lot of effort on. There really is no good reason to complain about any aspect of this knife. All it has done is tarnish the efforts of those who have done the work and soured the taste for this project and maybe future projects. Me even posting this is kind of sour. Unfortunately, it's dragging on and on and I felt someone needed to post something like this.

I couldn't agree more!!! I started this thread with the hopes that members would post their own pics and get more excited about this years knife. At this point I think it might be best to just wrap it up and close the thread........

Good idea.

And Woodrow, the blade length limit was snuck in on us - never put to a vote in a poll.

Oh, I have ordered one of the 2013 Blade Forum knives to support the effort.

It's not worth a p--ing contest. The 3.5" - 4" size range won. Someone wanted to retrict the blade length to 3" and they selected the 3.5" end of the range. Doesn't matter anymore as I've ordered a knife and of course will take what blade length comes with it. From now on, I'll treat it as a dead issue and won't bring it up again.

30.86% wanted a 3.5 - 4" knife
19.75% wanted a 3.5" knife

by making it a 3.5" knife the team satisfied 50.61% of the voters. That made it a clear majority, instead of a marginal one.

Ive seen the GEC moc up and Ive seen examples of the kind of handle material. I have also seen other similar knives and this IS going to be very nice knife. No my first choice from the polling but its going to be a great piece and it is a BF forum knife. I ordered one and I hope to order another.

After checking in on the 2013 Forum Knife thread today it sounded like there maybe a lot of members still "on the fence" about ordering this years knife. So, I figured I'd put together a little thread to help provide a little inspiration and/or motivation to everyone that hasn't pulled the trigger just yet. All knives pictured are congress jacks, or Irish jacks, the same pattern as this years forum knife. Take a look, provide your own pics, and send Spark some cash!!! ;)

Y'all enjoy.

I've got another FnR in Carmel swirl cell that I'll try to get pics of in the morning, until then I hope y'all like the pics and decide to add this years forum knife to your rotation!

Congress Jack, I had not heard it called an Irish Jack until your post. These knives are stunning and I am looking forward to receiving my own. I especially like the Empire with worm grooved bone.

I have been fortunate in that nearly every aspect of the knife that I wanted seems to have been chosen for the 2013. (A remake of the 2011 would be my top choice but a new knife each year makes sense, why re-do when you can have new). I have a fondness for the congress pattern and I seem to have more Jacks than anything. I also wanted a smaller blade because it fits my lifestyle and doesn't inhibit my carrying it in public in the UK. I don't want to revisit the the things I moaned about, I whined away about some stuff as much as others but I was being childish. I enjoyed the OP of the thread, 67nick and the pictures have rekindled my excitement. Thank you.

Paul

I think it's going to be a brilliant knife!

I'd be all over one if I could. I've had the chance to briefly handle only one Congress pattern in my time, but from what I can tell it seems like it would make for a very comfortable knife. A very smart design and I'm very much looking forward to pics when you guys get them.

Thanks to the OP too because I'd never even seen a Congress jack before.

Although it wasn't my first choice I still think it will be a beauty. Thanks to everyone that worked so hard to try an get this boy rolling. Sadly I ran into financial difficulties durin the polling time and will have to opt out this year. I'm sure ill be jealous of the live result
