2013 -Knife Hunter Big Buck Contest!---winner-KDSTRICK

I've never killed a hog - none around here. I want to give that a go some time. I hear it's a good time.

Yet... There will be hogs in your future. And when they get there you will wish they weren't there.

They cause billions of damage to agriculture, destroy fences and they are not only omnivores but predators. For a whitetail hunter this is bad mojo. I've had deer in my field feeding and had them run out for no apparent reason. 20 minutes later... here come the pigs. Prior to the pigs arrival, I've only seen that response from whitetail when Coyotes are present. Deer just do not like them and they will F up your hunt. Killing a pig on a deer hunt is sort of like winning Ms. Congeniality at a beauty contest. It's a bit of a consolation prize.

This happened to us five separate times this year. If pigs had antlers the story may be different.... hmmm....

A couple years ago... busted this one trailing a hot doe. About 20" inside spread, but a bit past his prime. The dog lived.

Nice buck, kdstrick. The dog seems unimpressed, but good to hear he made it. :)

Thought I'd add some pictures from a recent scouting trip. I like to stay out of what I know as "core areas" during the season, so after it's over I like to tromp through there and see what's going on. There's a lot of buck sign here this year - more than I'm used to seeing.

I took along my highly-trained, highly-skilled tracking team with me. This happened to be a nice day, and apparently that meant that Minecraft swords and other weaponry would be with us. Two of them (kids) are mine, one of them is borrowed. Mine are able to find tracks, scat, rubs, and scrapes now pretty well. They "help" with skinning and butchering, and think little of carcasses.

Here's a few of the rubs we found, in two distinct rub lines. One of these travel corridors I already knew about, the other one I didn't. One of the benefits of getting out there after the close of season, while sign is still easy to see. We found a lot more than this, and a lot more than I'm used to seeing at this place. My 5-year old is better than my 8-year old at finding rubs now, a fact he enjoys. :D

Also found what looks to be a fresh, but small, scrape, which I think is odd for this time of year. Can't see it in the picture, but there's an overhanging branch that's been worked, and you can see a track in the scrape. The track looked pretty crisp and fresh, but with all the moisture lately, it's hard to tell.

Anyway, pictures like this always get me pumped for next year. Turkeys are just around the corner, or at least I keep telling myself that. Have to start work on that, and have to find a good place to set up my nephew for his first turkey hunt, too. Never ends, and I love it....

Thanks for starting this thread - really cool to see the pics and stories, and to see two of my hobbies (knives and hunting) combined like this.

Also, sorry to hear about your mom - hope she recovers well.

Thank you very much. I appreciate that. She is doing well. She picked out a pretty baby blue cast and my kids all signed it for her:)

and now what we have all been waiting for........( drum roll please!))

The winner as I see it is KDstrick on behalf of his darling little girl!

We had some great bucks and hellacious stories for a good time. The folks in the running as I previously mentioned all had bucks that looked approximately the same size. After re-reading the rules and the stories found that Kdstrick had a bucnh of good post if not the most;)

He scored a great buck like the rest, but for the TRiple Crown, he also guided his daughter bringing a young relatively new hunter into our beloved way of life, and she scored an equally impressive buck as well.:cool:

So, Kevin!

Congratulations on a great year, and a wonderful memory to last a lifetime. Tell your daughter Congratulations, and let her know she's getting more than a t-shirt!:D

Many thanks to all and especially RWT, and MoCraig, for equally great bucks, stories, pics and passing it on down:cool:

Lets Drink!:D

Well done and well won. Congratulations KDSTRICK! :D

Thanks for all you do for us, Trevor. Hope things settle down around your place and that your Mom makes a full recovery.

HOLY SMOKES! I need to go buy a lotto ticket!!!

Thanks fellas.... and thanks a ton Trever... you da man. I told my daughter about this contest at the beginning of deer season and she is mighty fired up right now. When she shot her buck she asked me if I thought it was 'big enough to win'... At the age of 16, our time in the woods is the best quality time a dad can get. It's sort of funny how I've evolved since she shot her first deer at the age of 12. Thing is... I get more excited to see her shoot deer than when I shoot them myself and get a complete thrill out of her exuberance for hunting.

Awesome give a way and an awesome and fun thread.. Really enjoyed seeing all the great pictures and reading all the great stories. It was a fantastic deer season... a great new knife for my baby girl is just the icing on the cake!

Thanks again...

I can't wait until my little men are old enough to really hunt with me. I take them scouting, they've "blood trailed" (deer I've already located....shhhh), help hang stands, that kind of thing, but at 5 and 8 I don't feel like they're ready. They think they are, especially my oldest, and I suppose it's not far off. But I do look forward to taking them out when it's time.
