2014 Forum Knife

Just as an FYI, Case has told us several times in the past that our production numbers are too small for them to consider.

A 2014 on the new Viper pattern might be interesting.

The other aspect to this is trust and I want to believe that the profit motive does not exist on a forum knife. Hence, if everyone pays up front, it costs what it costs.

Why not, but with the myriad of Peanut offerings by Case, I don't think there needs to be a special version of one. With all the options that Case has been putting out, I don't see the need to make something new/different. ;)

Lulz. By peanut, I meant something in the "small jack" category. There are lots of unexplored options there. Even if Case wouldn't be interested, there's the Viper and Pembertons, Queen does a peanut.... there are some options in blades, bolsters, sheilds that could be unique.

As far as a sodbuster, there are wood, delrin, micarta, bone (I've even seen stag) options of all kinds with drop points, spear, sheepsfoot, hawkbill blades and even jack configurations. I guess you could try a clip point, add a boltser, shield and etch, but I'm not sure it would be a Sodbuster anymore.

What numbers would that be? Last time I called Case about having a special edition knife made up for an organization I belong to involving Vietnam helicopter pilots, the gentleman I spoke with in the engineering department said 350 knives would be a minimum order; of course that was for an existing pattern in production, with a slight upcharge per unit for a special shield and tang stamping.

Why shouldn't there be a profit? Someone is putting the money up front (a large amount of money at that) just to get the project started. I have no problem with their investment being rewarded..... especially with all the pain in the rear it appears to have been last year.

I don't know the numbers, but I think it was less than that.

^^^ what he said. ^^^

Someone makes a profit on pretty much every knife I buy. We're not talking about price gouging for plywood in a hurricane. If the price is reasonable, I'll buy one.

I am all for a Forum knife, I am finally in a position to buy one since the oldest graduated college, but I understand that the past difficulties of the other knives have caused a problem or 10.

I will admit that it would seem to be a big pain in the butt to do. If someone is willing to put all the money upfront and order, then yes, there can/should be profit. BUT, I will treat a forum knife just like any other knife and if I like the finished product and feel there is sufficient value, I'll buy. No promises in which case.

This is why I suggested collecting the money up front.

Historically the numbers here have been under 200.

...and I would hazard a guess that those numbers would be significantly higher if we steered clear of having something so different and customized, that the cost goes well over $100.00. I see the Sodbuster as a viable option simply because of its current street price of less then $45.00 for the jigged bone offerings. A forum knife as I have suggested could cost us members less than $65.00. The sheer simplicity of the design makes it such an easy candidate for having a special edition made. Heck, if you all want to spend three figures for a custom knife, then the numbers actually sold will be abysmal, especially if the actually rendered knife is not one would normally spend 3 figures for. I've looked at the previous forum knives, and feel they're just not for me; at any price.

And now you begin to see the issues with the process, just so far in this thread.

From my way of thinking, as long as some ground rules are established upfront, then I don't see a problem other than choosing a design and getting a handle on costs and units to be produced. The entire deal could be handled outside the actual forum and sold through the regular BF supporting dealers.

A canoe or peanut pattern would be good.

Yup. I'd be willing to help with this year's knife if we do one.

I do think the 2013 was truly an outstanding knife. Very well done. In hindsight, a shorter version would have been better so more people could participate, but I really like the knive as is.

Being out of work at the moment I'm as poor as a church mouse. Only thing I see me swinging for is an Opinel. Least it would be easy - just get them to do a BladeForums blade etch on an existing model. No minimum orders, no special run.

You know, I kind of like that idea, to be honest. It's a very traditional, very useful knife.

I'd be especially interested in a peanut, Texas Jack, slimline single blade trapper, lockback hunter with clip point blade, swayback jack or single blade swayback, and a few others. Let's try for a special shield or covers and a bladeforums tang stamp.

Maybe try for a single blade model this year?
