Hi folks,

It's a pleasure to start this thread. I've envied this show for years, and my current work circumstances opened up this schedule for me. I contacted Dave Harvey (Nordic Knives/show promoter) a few weeks ago to see if the opportunity was open, and after he queried a past photographer, I was able to confirm.

This is a formidable show, limited to 150 collectors. Contact Dave at Nordic Knives for more info.

The Show happens once every two years; off years from the similar Art Knife Invitational (AKI).

Here's the format from the website:

Our next Solvang Show will be held Saturday April 26, 2014.

The show will open to invited buyers at 10 AM for a three hour viewing period. At 1 PM each maker will conduct their drawings.

The impressive list of attending artists below is assurance that it will indeed be the world's most exciting custom knife event of 2014. As with our past two shows, this is an invitational event, limited to 150 buyers.

Each maker will bring a minimum of three, and a maximum of eight knives. Every knife will be sold on a drawing basis, giving every bidder an equal chance of winning the opportunity to purchase. The admission fee will again be $125 for buyers and $75 for spouses. Pre-registration is required - no tickets will be sold at the door the day of the show.

Nordic Knives will host an excellent lunch during the show, and also our legendary BBQ and wine event at the Gainey Vineyard in the evening after the show. If you are a serious buyer and are interested in attending the show, please contact Dave Harvey at Nordic Knives for an invitation.

I am privileged to have worked with nearly every maker here, and this event is something special to commit to. I'm fortunate. Dave Harvey has been very accomodating to me for this opportunity.

I am flying out on Thurs, renting an SUV, setting up on Friday, and will work Friday eve and early Sat morning. (I may be set up in the show hall, so ALL will be finished an hour before the doors open.) Leaving back to NY on tues eve redeye.

If you are going to this show, Dave and the makers look forward to your presence, and I look forward to your handshake. :D I'll post updates, and of course an array of incredible knives in this thread after they are finished.

Stay posted!

Hi, Coop.

I'm planning to be there (although I got a court summons for earlier that week - we'll see). It might be the only show that I attend this year. Assuming the court cooperates, I'm coming in very early Friday morning and taking a redeye back on Sunday night

Hope to see you at the BBQ at a minimum.

Coop, so glad the venue worked out for you! Your work will be a wonderful addition to the Solvang Show. See you there.

On April 24th I'll be at the Moscow "Arsenal" Knife Show,
introducing my latest book "The World of Art Knives" II...

Will miss spending time with you guys....

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Dave Harvey got the right man for the job! Good for you, Coop. Nobody does it better.

Thank you guys. Sure thing, Bruce: I'll step out of my comfort zone at around 10am Sat morning, and shoot people away from my tent.

Don't expect much. I'm an Average Joe photographer outside of the knives. :D

It will be great having you take some show shots. You have always been so damn busy at every show, I'm sure it will be a nice way to relax for a few minutes. See you there.

Well, my court matter resolved itself today. Yay! So barring airline problems or other misfortune I will be there. Flying out to LA very early Friday AM and combining this trip with some visits to clients on the Left Coast during the day on Friday, so I hope to arrive in Solvang around dinner time on Friday.

I will bring my camera just in case anyone gets tired of Coop's good pictures and wants to see some really crappy photos, which I excel at taking.

Other than Jim, Martin, Bob, Dave and the makers who have already spoken up, is anyone else who posts here going to be there?

Hi Ken! Great to hear you are making it. :D

I'm scrambling to finish some projects here and figuring out how to compress what I need to bring into manageable baggage.

Talk soon. I'll update my progress before leaving. :) Looking forward to meeting everyone, HOWEVER, I'm working alone and will need to shoo away chatty conversationalists. (That's often ME!)

I've asked Dave Harvey for any young/willing/extra person available (pay = $) to help me with some clerical work on friday. Keep me in mind. Just sayin'...

If I didn't have a doctor's appointment at 1:00 p.m. on Friday I would volunteer to be your clerical helper just so I could see all the great knives. I live about 20 miles west of Solvang and bought several knives from Nordic Knives before they started specializing in high end knives. Those knives are way outside my price range but I do appreciate the artistry and the skill that go into making them.

I'm writing from a quaint little bed and breakfast right here in Solvang. I had a busy day yesterday from Connecticut to here with flights and car rentals, and it all worked out safely.

I was unaware of what a beautiful area this end of the world is. Solvang is in a valley of lush green hills. The whole town has a Scandinavian flavor to it and there are little shops everywhere.

I've visited Dave yesterday afternoon at the hotel where the show has been hosted, and we went over an area where I can set up. Good news for both of us, I can set up in a little foyer just outside the showroom.

This allows me to keep it set up through the show and maybe afterwards. I found that collectors might need some work as well, and the only time to provide this would be after the show. I'll be here.

I'm off to get some breakfast, visit Nordic knives, and then start getting set up in the early afternoon. I've already seen a number of makers: Embretsen, Sawby, Kious, Hara. As things go, I will be hard pressed to comment here until after the show.

But, stay posted. :D

Jim

Posting from 37000 feet over Arizona on my way there right now. Ain't modern technology grand!

Combining the trip with client meetings in SoCal. Driving up to Solvang this evening.
