2016 GEC Rendevous Dates

Here's another past example from 2013; a 64 pattern indigo blue camel bone w/ swing guard :

Cory - I enjoyed your post my friend. Glad to hear your dad went with you. Creating a memory such as that would make the trip in my opinion. Once my girls get older I plan to make the trip myself.

I really appreciate it, Brett. I'm glad to see you posting again. I try to talk my parents into going on all of our vacations with us, because I want my kids to have the memories. We were all very excited that my dad got to make the trip, and I was surprised with how well he did. He had a couple of times where he had to just lay down for a while, but overall he kept up really well.

You'll have to let me know when you're ready to make the trip, as I'm definitely going to be there. I'd love to spend some time face-to-face with you. :)

First things first:
Due to ongoing medical issues, I have had to cancel. I will certainly miss seeing all of my Friends. Enjoy!

Knowing how much Bob enjoys the Rendezvous, I remain way concerned. Bob, it sure wasn't the same without you! In addition to your good company, I missed seeing your (In)Famous trunk stash, and those walking away happy. :) [GEC's store offerings were thin on the ground relative to other years, and you would have found yourself in the midst of a number of mutually beneficial exchanges. ;)

Previous things next:

Is the toolbox/storage thing you have in there bolted down or can it be taken in and out?

It's a Jeep-branded Add-a-Trunk, attached to the tub by large-knobbed screws, secure but designed to be easily installed/removed without the need for tools.

The top also flips up to either provide a surface for drinks, etc. (there's a pair of cupholder divots on its underside, that become a tray) or simply taller storage accessed from the rear door. It's not crowbar-proof, but provides welcome, out-of-sight storage, especially when I have the top down and/or doors off.

Packing light is overrated. :D

I was grateful to have my knives along, in quantity, for the showing and telling and 'scussing. :)

Ok. Time to end the suspense. This year's Rendezvous knife is a 74 in Primitive bone. Not my cup of tea....

I would have passed on the knife based on its description, but found it irresistible in person. (Pictures to come.) It's been the first official Rendezvous knife I've actually wanted, and I'm grateful to have been able to secure one.

This was Casey's first time at GEC. She isn't as interested in knives as me or anyone on here, but she said the tour and process was really interesting, and I think she appreciated getting to see some of Sarah's awesome collection.

It was really great meeting you guys! Casey was a real trouper. ;-)

The best part about the Rendezvous is seeing everyone again, meeting Forum acquaintances in person for the first time, and sharing our passion for traditional knives.

Loved meeting Charlie's better half, Joanne, in person, those two make an extraordinary whole.

I missed Bob Andrews.

It's always a pleasure, Lyle. I agree with everything you've written here.

Jack and everyone that has posted your experiences from the rendezvous...Thank you!!! Duncan and I will be there for sure next year:thumbup:

Whoa. For real?! That would be so great!

During our tour they were finishing up the 2 blade lumberjacks for the Rendezvous, and they really caught my eye. Unfortunately I couldn't stay long enough to snag one. However, I was able to get one this week and I'm very happy. After oil and a few opening and closings the pulls are quite strong but quite manageable. The bone is magnificent. The main blade is imposing, and the secondary is interesting and useful. I carried Rendezvous knives today:

Couldn't ask for better customer service from Chris, she really adds to the company and experience.

Had a little time now to decompress, what a wonderful weekend, great people, Charlie and his wife Joanne, Lyle, Sarah, Evan, Jack, Rob and many others.

Spending time with you guys there has become a highlight for me; I'm so glad you were able to be there again this year. :)

And of course the 45, what a cool knife, this is one of those patterns that I thought I would never like but when I got to see one and hold one that changed, just something about it, huge, hulking, bear trap snaps, wide expanse of beautiful bone. Picked up both the single and 2 blade, we were buying the 2 blades as they were just coming off the line.

If and when you can, please provide picture from the spine down, so others can get the full effect of the "muscle bone." :D

Little heavy for a raft but I fried an egg on it this morning:D

Next, try flipping pancakes....

Awesome post Augie!
Looks like you had a pretty good haul! I wanted to possibly snag up one of those two blade 45s for squirrel duty, but I ended up with a #72 in the grizzly bone.

And a beauty it is! I'm glad I got to see them in progress, and even gladder that you snagged one. The jigging sets the knife off so well, and will provide great grip. It was great seeing you again, and meeting Ainsley (sp?).

I have to say though I truly missed seeing Mr. Bob Andrews at the rendezvous. He has been a constant each year and not having him there was.... strange to me. Get better soon Bob!

Yes, that.

I ended up with three new knives from the Rendezvous. Two from my good friend Charlie's stash, the whittler being a gift and the other also a gift of sorts ,and the Rendezvous knife.

First the Rendezvous and the Paul Bunyan whittler.

I'm sure hoping that's the Whittler that spent some time here with me; that'd make me happy to know.

Charlie brought this one at my request and told me to display it with my other Ken Erickson rooster comb and the other displayed farmers jacks. When I was packing up he said he thought it belonged with it's kinfolks and would I like to acquire it for my collection. I said quickly yes and how, knowing whatever it took, which was very satisfactory for me and agreeable to my good friend.

So very perfect; I'm glad I was there for that part. Big smile, for both you guys.

I wish I'd taken a picture of y'all with flashlights in your mouths and/or cell phone flashlights in hand, peering at knives in the increasing darkness.... Okay, okay, so I joined in as well! Every little bit o' light helped.

I missed it this year due to car issues :(

That's too bad. We started keeping an eye out for you on Friday, hoping you'd show up!

I hated missing it but the car is still acting up...ugh, Mr Ford what have you done...:)

Lot new folks there this year, would have been great to meet you all and see friends again

Have you been to most of em? do you have the other rendezvous knives?!

I've been to a couple now, but knives with me are frequent flyers I'm afraid ;) love em and then go for the next on the horizon.

I don't have them but, that would make a great thread of images right there! might be a good sticky one too!

Thanks for posting the pictures! I'm planning on making the trip next year and camping nearby.

I hope you can! Bring your knife box(es). :)

One of the several wonderful knives that followed me home this year. As I've said elsewhere, the knives are great but the PEOPLE make the event. Ron, Pam, Augie, Evan, Charlie, Sarah, Lyle, John, Chris, etc etc, it was fantastic seeing you all again and catching up a bit. Can't wait for next year!! :D

Huzzah! I agree about the PEOPLE part, but the knives are no slouch-- and you are directly responsible for my being able to bring home some of the best knives of ever, this year. Wait, I think that's about the PEOPLE again. Thanks again!

One observation from the Rendezvous, I was very pleased to see the number of enthusiastic young collectors, it bodes very well for our hobby/obsession.

here is rob theapostlep's second video from the rendezvous https://youtu.be/nmKZrOCf2Vw

Thanks Jack,Charlie is the best, and my loudness and exuberance hindered this great interview. I wish I had assessed the situation better.

Lyle, we are the Background Noise! I, too, wish we had known to be quieter, but I believe the onus in this scenario is on the one filming, to alert us to the proceedings.

\What makes the rendezvous so special is meeting and chatting with other knife people, many of which have already posted here. Charlie definitely lives up to his reputation. He was very patient with my kids and very willing to chat about knives or any subject that came up. He was generous with his offerings of pins and blade keys. I really enjoyed getting a lecture on farmer's jacks from Lyle and having him run through his displays of examples with my dad and myself. It was very interesting and awesome to experience somebody that has so much knowledge in, and passion for, one pattern. Sarah was also a highlight. She's always been a huge addition to the forums, but I didn't realize how charismatic she is in person. She's a very easy person to talk to, and had a ton of knives with her to share and talk about. There were about a dozen other members here that I really enjoyed seeing and talking to, but these three stood out as really making my 12-hour road trip worthwhile.

Thank you, Corey-- it was great meeting you, as well. Thanks, too, for your detailed report of your different stops. Also: :o

Lastly, I was able to pick up a Ben Hogan barehead in ebony. I was told that this is the only one like it, but I'm more excited about it because I've been wanting a Ben Hogan for a while and barehead ebony knives are always cool:

The man speaks truth.

Wish I could've been there! Thanks for sharing the photos guys.

Here's a rare piece from a past Rendezvous that I managed to pick up on the secondary market. Hope you enjoy the photos!

Fantastic knife, Barry! Lyle had one of those along this time; it's an awesome piece for sure.

... I thought of you often throughout the week end, and have since determined that should I ever come into my Kingdom, I'd spring for transportation costs for you to be able to join us at the Rendezvous. I mean, it wouldn't be the first thing I'd do with my new-found major money, but it'd be right up there. :D

Mrknife, I believe I had a conversation with you and Sarah about how terrible we are at modifying knives.

I think that was, hearing about how mrknife consistently got in over his head in his attempts...? ;) [Not that I wouldn't majorly mess up whatever I attempted to "modify," but I've known better than to try, heh.]
