2018 Buying Habits?

The last knife I bought was a ZT 0562 (G-10, Elmax) when they were new. I’m very happy with what I have.

That almost changed tonight. I was in the area of a Sportsman’s Warehouse, with an hour and a half to burn. I saw a Benchmade Griptilian G-10 in the case. So sexy. I had the money. I was feeling weak. I decided to buy. Nobody came to acknowledge me in 10 minutes of real time. I wasn’t angry. I just shrugged and decided it wasn’t meant to be.

Things are slowing down, I bought basically all the knives on my list of wants. The 0462 hasn't arrived here yet, that's on the list still, the 0393BRZ is a maybe should it arrive here/become available, and I kinda want to buy a Raffir Noble Chapparal or a Pink Squeak as a gift (the Chapp isn't legal to carry, but it's better looking imho, but the Squeak is legal to carry, which makes more sense). Other than that, I am more looking into some custom scales for knives and finally getting a KME (not available here at the moment, but should be in a month or so again.)
So, we'll see. Other than those three knives, everything else would be impulse buys, a few knives I kinda sorta think are cool, but shy away from spending money on for now.

I've been spoiled by my Cold Steel Code 4 spear-point in CTS-XHP. Just hadn't felt interested in any more knives since. So this year, my one and only major purchase was a Spyderco 306UF ultra-fine stone which cost a bomb but theoretically, I could use it forever. I'm just in love with this stone. I may focus more on sharpening equipment this year...

20 knives and 2 trainers so far, and no sign of slowing down. If I nail a new job in a few months, buying is going to pick up it's pace.

2 - Les George Galvos Daggers. (TWO) leather sheaths, (TWO) kydex sheaths.

Why the double combo? Just because you think it's cool/like the idea of it? Just curious, it's kinda badass, but aside from that, did you have a reason for it? o_O:)

Here are just 2 examples of why I have stopped buying.

Around 2008 you could buy a Benchmade 520 Presidio, or a Spyderco Military for around $115.
Now both of those knives are around $170 give or take (I realize there have been improvements on both models). That is about a 47% increase in price. Over the same period my income has only gone up 23%.

The only knife I've picked up this year is my Spyderco Techno. I've kinda moved past budget blades and now I really only shop in the $100-$200 range, so buying has slowed down considerably. Hopefully I'll get my hands on a ZT 0452cf soon

You are fortunate. My income has barely kept pace with inflation. I also have had to re-visit some of my choices and consider the wants vs. needs.

My collection is for me, for now, and I envision giving it to my nephew and niece. They may not have the ability to buy what I am seeing at these prices. If better designs and materials come along, I'll replace what I have with newer models. We don't have the ability to see where knife laws are going so I'm buying. I'm a member of Knife Rights, GOA and NRA too.

Right now I'm looking to fill the need to carry sets of knives. Bought TWO Universal Blade Rigs from BRT BLADEWORKS (Ben Tendick) (1 Single Knife Rig, 1 Double Knife Rig)...and I'll probably buy backups to those rigs in case general use renders them inoperable. I've studied 10 martial arts, 5 of them Filipino knife arts (Escrima, Arnis, Kalis) so I understand their use and want to train up my brother (Chicago cop) as well as my nephew and niece (who studies martial arts). I'll probably buy one more RMJ TACTICAL Raider Dagger so that I have a set...and then keep looking for others "sets" to purchase for the double blade rig.

Bought two knives in 2017 (one was a gift) and nothing in 2018. Once the weather gets better, the wife and I will be cleaning up the basement and attic and many of my knives will be on the exchange. It isn't so much we need the money (although one daughter in college and a son is one the way..) but rather I have too many and a lot of them are sitting around not getting carried.

My wife isn't into knives. She carries a Vic classic on her key chain and that is it. I did manage to get her into firearms. She got her CPL in '16 and she got a S&W M&P 15 Sport 2 AR15 in '17.

Either way, my wife and I are big on budgets and sticking to them.

No new knives bought yet this year. I made myself one towards the end of last year (a small fixed blade) and I'm currently working on a couple more so my knife budget will probably be spent on tools and materials for now.

I am, and I don't take it for granted at all. I just think knife prices are going bananas through the roof. Some are still a great value but a lot of the new offerings from Spyderco and BM are just way too high for me to even consider.

SO YEAH... I finished out my sharpening system last night. I finally broke down and bought an 80 grit SIC stone for my super steels (yes diamonds are a sharpener's friend), and CKTG diamond pastes (down to .25 micron). On the upside, I finished my new years resolution and got a way to keep my knives super sharp.

The ultra stones are ultra worth it. It made my mini recon 1 my new leg shaver! (Mostly because it took all my arm hair already:D)
