2018 Forum Knife. The first poll

Which maker?

  • Buck 301. Choose. 2/3 blades, grind, steel: 420, CPM154, 154CM, S30V, S35VN, 20CV; handle mat'l,

    Votes: 267 73.6%
  • GEC 14 in 1095. Choose: drawn/cut swedge, plain/lined bolster Single or Two Blade Jack

    Votes: 96 26.4%

  • Total voters
    363
  • Poll closed .
I am surprised by the number of votes! Assuming some will buy one than one knife we will easily pass the minimum order requirements, which was a worry in my mind.

So we have over 250 votes in so that bodes well for an order of 250 if the interest continues. With about a 4 to 1 ratio for the Buck choice I was wondering if we should just move on to the next poll? I know this poll is supposed to close out next Tuesday but perhaps based on the current standings can we assume the outcome now?

Just askin'?

I think Frank's reason for waiting until early next week is many of our regulars are only around on the weekends. That gives everyone a chance to vote on this poll.
Frank might feel differently, since there's quite a lead. He'll be around later to answer.

I think this poll should go as long as planned. That way there will never be any doubts as to which won.
I know if I was only able to get on over the weekend, I would be disappointed/upset I did NOT get to vote, even if the one I wanted won.

I completely agree with this.

Yeah I do see and understand both sides but if only in the interest of covering all the bases (AKA Our Butt;))I believe letting the poll run its course makes the most sense.

I’ve voted in every poll since 2007, but would be equally pleased with either option this year. Both absolute winners.

Of course in 2014 I purchased the BFC knife AND the Eric’s Jack runner-up. :)

OK, I am good with that answer. Give everyone lots of opportunity.

you're not the only one!

Does the 301 made in Bucks custom shop still use the 3 backspring setup their production knives use?

Yes, the same number of backsprings as blades whether the 2- or 3-blade version wins out (in a subsequent poll).

My understanding is that the Buck custom shop doesn't currently have an option for the 301. I could be mistaken, though, but I feel like someone said that in one of the recent forum knife threads - that having a custom 301 would make it all the more unique in that regard since that's not something available to the general public at all currently. Apologies in advance if I'm wrong.

That is correct.

I know I have definitely learned a good lesson in the silliness of contempt prior to investigation. I'm grateful to everyone's post in the Traditional BF knife Thread that helped me to open my eyes and realize Buck does make some great knives.:cool:

What Gary said is exactly the reason I chose a week for this to run.
If we do close it early, it would close no earlier than Sunday night. I think that is only fair to the members.

IMO, this first poll is the most important one. Subsequent polls on the knife details will probably run for shorter periods of time.

I voted Buck. Personally, I would have liked a vote between the 301 and 501 if Buck wins the rights to make this year's knife. I'll still consider whatever wins out.

knarfeng knarfeng I agree, this poll is definitive and looks like a decisive vote in favour of the Buck option. The detail polls could be kept a bit shorter to keep things in focus, run from Friday morning to Monday night say?

Regards, Will

The great thing here is either knife is a win. I'm betting if the Buck 301 is this years knife we will be seeing a whole bunch of new folks to this forum coming here to jump on one, once the word gets out.
