I resolve to buy based on economy rather than exclusivity.

Selling off expensive custom stuff in favor of production stuff that quite possibly performs better.

Buying more practical than cosmetic knives.

A Randall Model 1 ordered in 2014, a custom fighter I'll have made and a Benchmade Bugout: that's pretty much all I'll intend to get next year. Maybe another custom fixed blade, drawn by me and made solely for me to my specs (does that qualify as custom?!?) but I really don't foresee any prod/high end prod knife purchase.

2017 has been very good for me (in term of knives), although a bit unreasonable. Time to get real.

The hunt for PM2 exclusives and sprint runs continues...... Otherwise I resolve to buy only one knife a month unless an I cant live without it, Ive been looking for one of those forever, you would be stupid not to buy it for that price, or Ill never see one of those again comes up.

First post here from a long time lurker.
I plan on more or less finalising my collection early in the year as the uk government is in the process of passing legislation to ban online knife sales including kitchen knives .
I know , pretty unreal isnt it .
Us uk guys will soon only be able to purchase a knife in person from a shop which limits us to the usual poor selection the shop has in stock.
In the uk dedicated knife and outdoor supply shops are far from common .

All the best for the new year folks.

I resolve to not buy a knife in 2018. I doubt I'll make it, but I bought a crazy amount of knives in 2017 and really only use a handful of them. A year without buying a knife would probably be a good idea. I should probably extend this resolution to guns as well, but let's try this one step at a time.

No new knives in 2018.

I'm in the same boat. Definitely deciding to go for more practical choices this year. I don't think I went overly silly this year, but I have a few knives I should have considered a bit more instead of jumping on.

I have 2 categories I need to fill for 18'. A good quality slipjoint, and a custom fixed. Nothing fancy, just a brute I can use for everything(think Gollik) and a little companion for said brute.

Done buying knives. I have so many folders and fixed blades I would need 3 lifetimes to wear them out much less use. I have settled on the First Edge line of folders for edc, and a Dan Leeper for an edc fixed blade. Those will be users. Now let the sell off begin. keepem sharp and Happy New Year.

Gonna add this on the Leeper fixed blade I have. It is the only knife I've ever received where I didn't feel the need to resharpen or touch up the edge it is that sharp and that good to begin with and it's 440c.

In 2018 I want to own good examples of brands that I don’t yet have and aren’t crazy expensive. ZT, Emerson, Southern Grind, etc. I like my Benchmade and Spyderco knives, but want to expand and try some new things.

I am done with buying $30-50 Chinese knives as well. I have enough and would rather have one high quality American made knife than 2-3 lesser quality off shore knives.

@Charkie Mike Matt, you never struck me as an elitist or one to buy or acquire anything based on popularity or trending. I know you to be the type of person to keep what works and if it's popular so be it. In that same vane no matter how popular and how many people blindly follow a maker or brand, if you don't like it, it doesn't suit your need or perform like you expect you get rid of it.

I've seen you give up what to me seemed to be perfectly good knives but you're a minimalist and unneeded or unused equipment for whatever reason you don't like it and won't use it, space and weight is at a premium so you keep what works and lose what don't. That's a throwback to a gypsy lifestyle, a person on his feet who tends to carry all his worldly or most important possessions with them.

You own a house and a car now brother. I know how single-minded and focused you can be and have no doubt you'll succeed and whittle your blades down to the best production options out there I just wanna see what you come up with brother. I have a feeling that once you find that sweet spot, the best bang for your $buck$ of the production blades out there and I'm curious to see your choices and watch your journey as you make those choices and play out the results. I think you're gonna realize what most knife makers do. You'll never really be happy with any production knife, you'll always find something wrong with production knives since that's the nature of the beast with production blades.

It's expensive and time consuming tryin' to insure 100% of your blade produced are near perfect and as they all do, they settle on a happy medium, a compromise where a certain percentage of a lot is expected to have problems and it's easier to take care of the problems on the back side when and if the end user complains.

I wish you much luck in your quest Matt and look forward to sharin' the journey with you but I honestly think you'll always find something wrong and will always come to the conclusion that you can do it better.

Happy Holidays and MHL&R brother, hope your years only continue to get better from here on out. Give the kitties a scratch behind the ears from me.

I was doing really good in 2017 not buying knives... until October. Was all down hill from there

I've got many, many knives I've accumulated that haven't really fit in my collection, once I bought them. I resolve not to spend more on knives in 2018 than I get back in selling the ones I don't need/use/collect any longer...

Well... My 2018 knife resolution is to get my knife dealer business up and running! I have the licenses and logo ready. And I'm developing the website right now.
Knives have always been a passion of mine since I was a little kid. I've been collecting them ever since. I've been working on this for a while, and it's coming together well.
I can't advertise it on here until I get the Dealer Membership, but I will tell you the company is called "One More Knife" because there's always room in the collection for One More Knife. I can't wait for you all to see it!
