2018 knife resolutions

I resolve to make targeted purchases that fill a need, not just want.
One in, one out.

That being said, I am fairly good with that now. I have three folders, three or four fixed blades of varying size, and a few traditionals in the mix. So I just have to tighten my belt a little...

I intend to get just 3 next year but they are all expensive. No more budget knives. I get no, none, nada, zero owner satisfaction from budget knives anymore. I have to cut back to so I can get my 1911 next year.

Careful with that, you may find you have more 1911s than family members in short order if you're not careful. Ask me how I know this . . .

Last year I spent $1,400 on 9 knives.
This year I have 2 on my list.
No more impulse buys.

I do plan to take a couple bladesmith classes.
I will forge more knives in 2018 than I did in 2017.

Sell ones I don’t use or carry.

I know I can’t say “no new knives” so really try to limit myself to a few. I try to get one of each GEC pattern, but besides the Spyderco Respect, there’s nothing else on the horizon as of right now.

So my 2018 will be a few GECs, a badass fixed blade, and maybe a couple folders...

First post here from a long time lurker.
I plan on more or less finalising my collection early in the year as the uk government is in the process of passing legislation to ban online knife sales including kitchen knives .
I know , pretty unreal isnt it .
Us uk guys will soon only be able to purchase a knife in person from a shop which limits us to the usual poor selection the shop has in stock.
In the uk dedicated knife and outdoor supply shops are far from common .

All the best for the new year folks.

Sounds like your resolution should be to move to a country that doesnt infringe on your rights!

I resolve to hold all my cash for the S90V and CF Spyderco PM3 and whichever new Spyderco Military Sprint model gets released. Other than that... no new knives

I resolve to not buy a knife in 2018. I doubt I'll make it, but I bought a crazy amount of knives in 2017 and really only use a handful of them. A year without buying a knife would probably be a good idea. I should probably extend this resolution to guns as well, but let's try this one step at a time.

No new knives in 2018.
Ok maybe just 1?

I' m going to keep a few high end production folders. Mostly just for show. Production folders have just become too pricey. I have U.S. Made Benchmades that I only paid $50 or $60 for. Today, like models run for $100 plus. Some EDC models I' m looking at in 2018: SKIF Knives, new SOG china made Arc locks, and a few counterfeits of some companies I' m not fond of.

I resolve to look at each of my impulses to buy in 2018, and toss that much cash into a kitty for a new firearm. If I see something on the exchange that's $75 that I want, I'm going to will myself to put the $75 into the bank account and keep moving forward thus with the balance.

I spent a grand this year on knives. Pretty much each of them was an impulse buy. Really the only one that I went in to deliberately get for myself was the Benchmade Bugout. Most of the rest were pieces that I ended up giving away, and the ones I kept are pieces that seriously have a small likelihood of being used. Hell, you can't even carry autos or balisongs in Washington State, so buying them really isn't the height of practical for me.

I don't need the new gun either. But I've bought a buttload of knives in the last couple years and haven't added a new gun to the stable for quite some time. And though I can't legally carry or use some of the knives I bought this year, I can carry or use whatever gun I select.

But just like my other resolutions, they're probably doomed. I'll buy a bunch of knives and not lose a pound this year.

Thin the herd. I have too many knives I just don't carry. I don't believe in safe queens and none of my knives are collector items. Some of my early CRKT and Gerbers from the 90s are just plain crap.

I only bought 2 knives in 2017 and one was a gift for my nephew. The other was a practical and economical Rat 1 in D2 (KW exclusive orange scales). I've been a good boy on the knife front lately.

Earlier this year, I came up with some rules of collecting. (I don't mean collecting in the strictest sense; I use most of my knives.) I'll admit I didn't always adhere to these rules in 2017. Here they are:

No duplicates
No equivalents - this means only one version of a model. Yes only one PM2!
No downgrades - can mean different things. For instance I won't buy a steel framelock because I have ti framelocks.
No faceless (Chinese) companies - no knives from companies without a website and warranty. Maxace, TwoSun, CHKnives, etc.
Buy what I like on sale - Be patient, bargains come along especially in the secondary market.
Don’t buy what I don’t like on sale - don't buy something just because it's a good deal.
Evaluate a knife’s value independent of “sale” price.
Don’t overfill capacity - I have an arbitrary capacity constraint (Spyderpac) that serves to limit my total.
One at a time - don't have more than one knife in the mail incoming.
No fixed blades - because I make them.
Know when to break the rules

I’m not planning on buying any knives in 2018. And I’m hoping to settle on 2-4 knives that I currently own and use them exclusively through out the year. We shall see how that goes.

I could go an entire year without buying a knife, no problem. A year without buying a gun? Yeah, that's not gonna happen...

Wish you success in your goal !

Mine is fairly simple but does take some self control

My plan, and I think I attempted it before, is to carry one knife for a week at a time. Fortunately my collection is pretty small now so a rotation like this should be doable

G2

I want to make my first kitchen knives this year. Trying to put money into building my workshop and a grinder rather than buying more knives right now.
