I gotta do better in 2018. I don't think I managed the will power to pass on a single GEC run this year. There were several I thought I would as they were announced, with the AmJacks being the most recent. "I've got plenty of two blade jacks," I said. But alas I have 2 blade smooth white in the pocket today. Another that comes to mind was the 38. Nothing "Special" about those 38s, with just the one blade I thought. Until I found one with really popcorn-y stag.

I know I bought at least one each of the following in 2017, and ended up with several of a few (per the following (ir)rationales):

#13 (x2, but at least ones a whittler and ones a "clerk")
#15 (forum knife, gotta support that)
#25 (they're just so cute, and it had Desert Ironwood covers)
#35 (x3:eek: (actually surprised I didn't end up with more, they are pretty much perfect))
#38 (see above)
#48 (didn't have a single blade 48 yet, I like bloodwood, and it was called the weasel)
#54 (again with the Desert Ironwood)
#66 (it had been so long)
#71 (not sure why I bought this, hence its gone)
#74 (x2, had to, its the closest thing to a Lannys Clip they make)
#78 (had some KSF credits to blow)
#81 (x2, regret at having sold my abilene)

Can anyone remember any other patterns that ran this year, and make me feel as if I have a shred of will power?
I can't remember any, unless you count the fixed blades.

Any one else batting 1000 for '17?
Got any other knife-related (traditional) resolutions?

I didn't pick up as many knives as you did, but I realize I still managed to pick up a few now that I just did a quick mental accounting. One of them was a long time denizen of the wish list. As I get older, I no longer feel the urge to pick up every new knife that catches my eye. My needs are already well met by knives already in hand. But Blondie showed me the pleasure in picking up a knife that you really want (14 years, give or take a few months). I think I'm going to start saving for a couple of other knives I've long desired, a Misono Gyutou or a Jason Knight bowie. Perhaps I'll go really big and aim for that stag handled Hell's Belle.

After the holidays, I'm gonna have a big sale. Most of my life I spent with a couple of folders (a scout knife and a lockback), and a couple of fixed blades (a 5" hunter and a filet knife). By the grace of God and some good investments, my wife and I now enjoy a very comfortable lifestyle, and my knife collection has exploded. I've tried just about every pattern of folder and fixed blade around, and have settled on some things. My knife storage area is overloaded, and some just have to go. I've also decided that I pretty much prefer stainless steel, so very few additional carbon knives will be purchased (excepting some wow GEC patterns, like the Churchill or Yankee Whittler).

It is time for quality over quantity. So for 2018, I resolve to sell more knives than I buy, and reduce my collection by at least 25%. I'll still have more than I need, but it's a start, anyway.

Thats a good goal Jeff, I might try the same. I did sell the 71 and 15 from this year, so thats a start!

I have a feeling next year is going to be worse for me...

Probably will end up with several 44's, at least one of the 43's. Thought I was done with the 78's, but might not be able to resist the single blade ebony (2018 purchase). We are way overdue for NF barlows - will want all of those. Long ago there was some posts that maybe (big maybe) we might see Washington Jacks in '18 - which would make sense if GEC has a run of 77's, NF barlows, and Washington Jacks... anyway, will want all of those even though I need none of them. Then there's the 2018 forum knife.... maybe a 14 clip...

I probably should sell some knives

I sold more than I bought this year, which is good and bad. My fixed blade collection grew a huge amount, and I could stand to curtail that down some, too. I've got a custom order fixed blade that should be fine somewhere around March. That's the only knife that I've planned to purchase in 2018. We'll see how things play out, though. Might sell some more, but I don't see much of an opportunity to buy more, honestly.

My traditional knife resolution is to make one! A folder, to be more specific. If not 100% make from scratch then modify so much that you can't tell what it used to be.

I've been kicking the idea of a slipjoint or lockback around for a while, even drew some on AutoCAD and bought spring stock. I just never quite got around to doing it.

Another thing I really wanted to do was rebuild a knife (probably an OT) with all copper hardware instead of ns/brass. I saw one of those KaBar copper knives posted here a while back and it was love at first sight until I saw the price tag. That, and making it yourself is a double win since you get the knife itself plus the learning expierince and sometimes a new tool out of the deal.

My goal for buying a knife in 2018 is to get a Buck 103, and a Svord Peasant.
Of course my goal of just those two may go all to heck, if Rough Rider comes out with something I just "have" to have ... or if I find a Buck 301 or 110 at the pawn shop that is not over priced ... :)

I got a few pretty nice old pre 1960 schrades this year, so next year I plan to get more. No reason to spend money on anything but the best.

1.Never have a knife that I won't carry and use.
2. Always touch up the blade every morning on the bottom of the coffee mug. (After finishing the coffee of course.
3. Never touch liquor before sundown, but never go to bed quite sober.
4. Watch the sunset every day, and try to figure what you did wrong and correct it tomorrow.

Did I mention not going to bed sober?

Wouldn't never going to bed sober count as doing something wrong?

Stay up until you sober up, then drink water and eat something salty. You'll wake up like you never drank at all.

That reminds me, I forgot some.

1) Get a Buck 310/309 whittler. Lightly used, for a deal of course. I have a Texas Jack that I really like, but I think having both straight and curved edge small blades is better than just the usual clip and pen.

A stockman is close, I know, but I like my small blades to be SMALL, like an xacto knife. A peanut stockman doesn't have a big enough main and the medium/large stockmans don't have small enough secondaries.

And Buck because I prefer to carry 20-ish dollar knives so won't kick myself too hard if I lose it. I try to be careful and carrying it in the watch pocket really helps, but they still slip out sometimes, especially since there's no clip or sheath.

And non-knife related, I want to watch all of the original Star Treks in order. I love all kinds of science fiction, I have no idea how I missed out on Star Trek.

My thoughts right now are that I won't buy any knives in 2018. Im also giving serious thought to carrying and using only two or three knives during the upcoming year. Or maybe just sticking to one or two patterns. Not sure yet.
I have accumulated more knives than i can use in 10 life times. I really, really feel the need to simplify things a little.

I really like #4. As Scarlett O'Hara said, "Tomorrow is another day." And another chance to get it right. :)

Press on regardless...
