Augie Augie you might want to think about clarifying which rosewood you want as a poll option... che Chen was a nice one if I recall

List on page 42 of this thread

I still think ebony or blackwood may look the best, with a longer shield, and all steel.

However, tiger maple or oil sucker rod may get my vote if they are options.

It'll be a tough call though, waverave's all steel ebony with banner shield looks about perfect (for a wood handled knife:))

Glad to see Mike listed African Blackwood. It does look well rounded. There's a lot going on with the blade so the understated wood looks nice.

Ryan, that's the mock up that really does it for me, such a classic look with either wood.

I agree. I was hoping ebony wouldn't be mentioned just because I think the African Blackwood is a better option as far as a blackwood is concerned. The two could compete against each other.

Don't think this is accurate. Diamond Wood and Coconut Palm have not been made in the last 5 years.

His post I quoted was in response to someone asking him to post all the wood he had listed in his GEC database. Some of the ones listed are going to be out of your 10 year time range.

For sure....but it may be hard to pass up on some of the other options. It'll be very interesting to see what GEC will offer.

While I prefer the banner shield on ebony, and some of the other woods. A smaller shield may be better suited for something like tiger wood. I guess we'll have to keep @waverave around a little longer:p

P.s. thank you Darren for all the time and effort you put into these awesome mockups!

I agree. I think the dense grain structure, consistent black color, and the darkness of African Blackwood is better than Ebony.. in my opinion..for this knife.

I believe we all have the right to nominate and vote for what we want.
I knew that was coming and that's not what I'm implying. You certainly have the right. I would be happy with either and will vote for a blackwood. I'd just hate to see a blackwood vote split thus eliminating it is all. I do think the AB is a better quality over ebony but either will get my vote.

As big a fan as I am of Ebony, I would likely vote for African Blackwood over it. Where I have seen and received brown Ebony or streaky Ebony, I have never seen or come across Blackwood that was anything but Black.

All I'm saying is if those who truly want a blackwood on this knife, it would probably help our cause if only one were available to vote for. That's all. Either choice is my personal 1A / 1B

AB is not a guarantee of being all black. Just an FYI. Here's a 48 with AB that has lots of brown streaks. An anomaly, but possible. It still looks good imo.

I have seen some AB that was not pitch black; but it was the anomaly. Whereas Ebony has a high percentage with brown, simply depending on what the supplier ships. Some like the brown; just wanted to comment (and will again on the actual poll).

Good point, I'd hate for ebony and BW to split votes and both end up losing because of it. Maybe a mini poll to see which one goes on the official poll. Or maybe GEC telling us which one they'd prefer to use and think we'd like. :)

To be frank, I don't think there is a wood out there that I would be displeased with. It generally is my favorite cover material.

Though my vision for this knife involves a black wood of a sort and my collection is largely comprised of knives that are covered in such, I will certainly welcome whatever the majority decides upon. It really is hard to go wrong with wood.

Some Cocobolo from 2017.
