2020 GEC #19 Little Rattler Thread

I received my 19 in Stag today and that rounds out the entirety of the Little Rattler run for me. Honestly, it isn't a pattern that excites me terribly due to its size but I will certainly be happy to have a couple in my collection and will be pleased to see my kids open the others on Christmas Day.

Very nice Stag on those two!

That's a good question, Harry. There was no question that I would be keeping the Stag - for the others, it was simply a matter of determining which ones I thought my kids would appreciate versus ones I'd prefer to hang onto. I think in the end, it works out for all of us.

My son has a liking for more modern looking knives so the Micarta will go to him. He already appreciates the material on some of his other knives and he will like the snake etch.
My youngest daughter will really like that Teal color so that one will be going to her. I think it will look nice with the Aqua Camel Bone #12 that I have set aside for her as well.
My other daughter (who is my youngest adopted sister that I now have custody of - she is a bit older than my son) was a bit trickier. She grew up on the same farm that I did and therefore cultivated the same appreciation of snakes that I did as well - so I think she will get the Snakeskin Acrylic.

That leaves me with Stag, White Bone, and Kingwood. I am pretty happy with those choices.

The #19 makes for a rather small canvas so it is hard to think that it would be possible to get bad Stag on these. I am pretty pleased with mine - Mike sent me a good one.

Lots of good dark color, nice grooves, and somewhat evenly matched in terms of thickness.

I've been contemplating the same thing for my kids except I have to part with 4 of them! o_O Which ones, which ones...?
I'll probably end up keeping the stag and Kingwood (and I have an extra micarta).
Merry Christmas!

I saw a guy on Facebook with two broken backsprings on his 19s (king wood and stag). Anyone else heard of this problem?

It seems both knives had their springs break at the same location...... It would appear there is a stress riser at that spot...... I see Randy Bell has his nose under the hood (bonnet for our UK members), so help is on the way.......

Will this make them even more rare?!

only 998 in existence now!

When I go to sleep I hear the “sproing” of my 19s self destructing.

Can I trade in 3 19’s for a 57?

It would be nice to be able to see the 2 springs .

I'll try to find the video the guy posted. It was in the same spot on both knives. Another guy posted a video showing where three different covers had three different tensions on them. It makes one wonder whether one of the effects of COVID has been some turnover in the workers at GEC. I wonder if they've got some new folks who are still learning the ropes. Or maybe being a little understaffed has impacted the QC? Or maybe they are just a few abnormalities.

Broken springs are very unusual , never encountered one on ANY of my knives (different makes) yet. Reaches to touch large piece of wood....

What are the odds that the same guy gets the two with "bad" springs? Either there are more, a lot more, that we don't know about or he is doing something crazy with his knives.
That was my thought as well. A bad heat treatment would presumably happen to a batch of knives, not two. Perhaps some bad peening could put a crack in the spring? I really don't know enough about GEC's knife construction process to identify where the problem could have arisen. I don't think the guy was intentionally doing things to the knives to damage them, but I could be wrong about that, too.

IMO, the final analysis will show failure due to vibration caused by recreative flipping/cycling of the knife... I wouldn't rule out design shortcomings too, but I think the life cycle of the spring(s) were used up by flipping/ playing with the knife.... When the spring vibrates the harmonics can induce metal fatigue at a stress riser in the spring.... Using the knife as a toy can/will shorten It's life...

I dont disagree with that, but a few weeks is a pretty short life even if he was flipping them open and closed all day.
