2020 Memorial Scout Knife GAW

A very touching story and generous giveaway. I also have some family and friends who have struggled with addiction so I know what your family went through.

Since my kids are grown and I'm a few years away from grandkids I'll enter for JTB_5 JTB_5 's student - sounds like that young man could use a pick me up.

Thanks for the generosity and for sharing your story.
Thank you. I appreciate the support!

Not an entry, just wanted to say it's a fitting (annual) tribute to your brother, and also BSA, who have been in turmoil the last few years. As a former scout leader, I remember fondly the good times our pack had.

What a phenomenal way to honor those you’ve lost. I’d love to enter my son Joseph. He turns 10 next week. This would be his first knife of his own. My son Sam just won a Buck 303 from @CHNeal so i would love to start collecting for my other son as well.

The generosity of this community blows me away!

Me and Joseph earlier this spring.

I am in but if I win I want it to go to Joseph. That kid needs a knife badly, if hes gonna be catchings hogs like that! My boy is only 1 so his first knife is a ways out.

I just thought I would bump this thread for anyone coming by the forum this weekend.

I'm in. If I win I will give the knife to my son. He's an Eagle Scout. I was a scout and had a Boy Scout knife but lost it (I think it grew legs and walked away;)). My son had a very nice Boy Scout knife that I bought for him but, like me, lost his too. Must run in the family:rolleyes:. I went to all his group meetings and monthly camp-outs. Great fun and memories that I truly treasure.

I am shocked at how few options there are to buy a new scout/camp style knife for a reasonable price unless it is made in china which is really a rather sad thing for a knife that seems to American. Best option I can find w/o breaking the bank is some models of SAK that will cover the needs and the 2012 Remington Scout Knife you can find on some places in stock for under $40.

It is very sadly true. Especially if you want the classic scout pattern. I don't know any US makers currently making a classic scout pattern with the bail. I'd like to get a Case scout. And if GEC ever made a stainless scout with a bail, I would be all over that.

Prize updates!

Starting at the bottom of the picture, @willintheweeds much appreciated addition to the GAW is a lovely (new, only-taken-out-of-the-box-for-the-photo) Bear and Son Cub Scout Knife. This one, like all the others that Will has donated over the years feels like a great knife for the cubs in your life.

Moving to the top is a new-in-the-blister-pack Deluxe Scout BSA knife from Scout Stuff. These ones don't have a bail, but they do feature a handy Phillips head screw driver.

And then moving to the middle is actually my six-year-old daughter's addition to the GAW! There is a big knife show here in Eugene (most years, sadly not this year due to COVID-19) that happens to fall right around my daughter's birthday. We have been going together since she was a toddler, and I typically wander around and pick up a few scout knives for gifts. At last year's OKCA show, Abby was actually given this older Ulster BSA scout knife. She liked this knife, but the screwdriver/cap lifter is a real nail breaker, it isn't shiny, and more to the point, she usually uses her green Girl Scouts scout knife. So when I ordered the Deluxe Scout and another Cub Scout knife (not pictured), Abby fell in love with the shiny blue knife. She decided she wanted to trade her brown knife to the GAW so that she could add the blue knife to her growing little collection.

So I am glad to be able to add a classic Made-In-America, Boy Scouts of America Scout Knife to the GAW, courtesy of Abby. The Ulster knife is not new, and as you can tell, it isn't minty, but it does not appear to have seen a lot of use, and I put a decent edge on it for whoever gets the knife.

Abbydaddy, I’ve viewed your GAW each year that you have conducted it and feel like I know the story pretty well - it is always a touching memorial to your brother and a good remembrance of him (I lost my own younger brother to cancer, the one I was in the Boy Scouts with, seven years ago yesterday - he would be 62 now). I will enter the child’s portion of the GAW for my great nephew Ryder, who turned six this past Monday - he would be thrilled to own a pocketknife and his Dad will be a good teacher for its proper use. OH

I’m in for one of my students who lost his mother to cancer last month. He’s the oldest of five kids (12 years old, maybe 13) and his dad has brain trauma from a work accident he suffered from before the family moved into town almost two years ago. He’s going to have to grow up fast, but he’s a super kid who really wants to do well.
I'd like to enter the GAW on behalf of Joshua's student.
One of the many things I like about The Porch are the many annual traditions, and that certainly includes this yearly GAW as a memorial to your late younger brother, abbydaddy abbydaddy !:thumbsup: A generous GAW and a fine tribute (and a great example for your daughter)!

Thanks Gary!

Okay, it is drawing time. For the kids drawing we have 14 entries (for 8 possible kids), and for the adult drawing we have 2 entries (good odds on that front). Of course, as per usual, there will be at least one behind the scenes knife sent to whomever I decided should get one based on my own criteria, but I don't typically post about those knives.

I've got the random number generator up, for the kids knife the winner is:

That means that A abcdef wins one for Abby!

And for the adults knife the winner is:

Congratulations @Neko2 you get a new knife!

Thank you to everyone who entered.

I haven't mailed off the knives yet because I want to do it in just one trip to the post office. I am still waiting on a response from A abcdef I can see that he has been on BF. I'll give him until tomorrow to reach out to me.
