2022 GEC #59 Shaffer Farm Whittler Thread

I keep going back & forth over this pattern...gives me something worth worrying about :D

First off I fancied the Acrylic but not all of it looked that well finished, Ironwood didn't do much for me, looks kind of brittle...Stag is always a contender but have generally found most of it underwhelming. Which leaves the Mint Chocolate Bone, looks really pretty, great shield and very good pin finish. Now all I need is a trade...I think ;) But that Hummingbird still haunts:eek:
The Hummingbird acrylic versions are nice. I really like the versions without any of the brown streaks. I have seen two of them so far. Good luck with your search.

I got the Ironwood, although it took a while to find one without a crack in the wood at the spring pin - it looks great.

I also got the Mint Chocolate JB - the pick of the bunch in my opinion, and F&F superior to my Ironwood example.

Stag is a lottery, but it's difficult to imagine any knife failing to delight in the right stag...

Can't comment about Acrylic because I don't 'do' them, just a personal thing, but most of the Hummingbird I've seen in pictures is attractive for sure.

I have an extra hummingbird acrylic with very little red in it. I may part with it if someone had something interesting I don't have for a trade

rdave rdave very good pic of the Acrylic thanks. I just completed a very satisfactory trade with stipe82 stipe82 for a Bird and I'm extremely taken with it. My photo is poor as it really sparkles in electric light but I wanted to include it here, GEC does a grand job on many of its Acrylics, certainly a fan

Best pattern in recent years hands down
It is a great pattern, and beautifully made. I have the DIW and the Mint JB, can't decide which I like more. My only gripe being the way the kicks on the tangs on the secondaries align with the bolster when open, but it's a very minor point and not something which affects use (at least not once I smoothed the little sharp bit out).

The hummingbird acrylic has so many different variations, from dark to light from a busy color scheme to not so busy color scheme.so hey now is the middle one orange acrylicwasnt sure by your answer.

I tried to search it, but it shows nothing. Jiki Jiki Jim, could you please remind me, is title knife actually good for whittling? I am pretty sure you said it is and showed something you created with it, though can't find it... And how good it is from a perspective of a notorious whittler as yourself: pretty good, mediocre, or hard to operate and for experienced only?

If you would like to use the 59 as a whittler I think you will be happy with what it can do. It is not a 62 or a 38 which in my opinion are a little better suited for the task. However the 59 is comfortable in hand in both directions. The blades are thin a cut well with just a little work on the stone. I took the main down to 17° with the thought of it being both a general utility and a rough out blade for carving. It performed with this edge however I may lower it a bit more in the future but there is no rush at this time to do that. I took the secondary blades down by hand as low as I am capable (maybe a nickel under the spine on the stone) both performed well. The pen blade is in my opinion too thick right behind the tip, which is typical on spear blades. I'm going to deal with that today or tomorrow.
This Santa was 98% carved with the 59. I had some issues with the eye lids so I cleaned them up with a gouge.
It took me quite a bit longer to carve than if I were using purpose built carving knives and gouges. Longer that if I was using a 62 or a 38. Some will see this as an issue, in my opinion whittling is an activity that is undertaken to relax and enjoy the process not one to put a timer on.
In summary, the 59 is a beautiful knife (with more beautiful covers on the way). Fit and finish on my example is spot on. This knife can be used as a whittler or an EDC or both. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I will mine.

@alex.y I would update this with the fact that I carry mine as an EDC and whittle with other knives I find more comfortable. The 35 cattle knife along with the 62 and 38 get more use.

Comfortable in terms of handle size, or blade properties (shape, thickness, etc.), or both?
