.22 beretta sub-compact for backpack???

The AA conversion kits are generally regarded as the best.

But for ~250 bucks just go buy a whole gun.
 
I would also agree that the S&W 317 is an excellent choice however I have experienced an incident where a heavier caliber seemed warranted with two legged critters prowling the campsite. Personally, I would live with the extra weight of the Glock.
 
On top of the shelf/cabinet unit was the only place the bear could not reach her. And from the write-up the bear wanted to reach her. I'm sure that after each sting the bear renewed it's efforts to try and invite her to dinner.
She was lucky, no doubt.<><
