If you are 'hunting' deer, then anything smaller than a centerfire .243 shouldn't even be considered!!
HOWEVER, in a 'survival' situation, all laws and ethics are out the door, it's your LIFE you are playing with. (Many poachers that take deer with .22's are IN this situation daily...unemployed, have family, etc.)
So said, if I was in a survival situation with a .22lr and had the opportunity to shoot a deer I wouldn't think twice about taking it. Chances are though that I would be 'making' the opportunity by hunting at night and even setting 'snares' to catch one and hold it for me. Remember, all laws and ethics are OUT the door. If I had a deer 'snared' then I 'may' consider using a snare, but more than likely would just shoot it in the head with the .22 to make the job faster and more efficient.
