Hey Guys...

I am thinking of getting a .22 pistol. This would just be for target shooting, taking camping, etc. I am thinking of a .22 because they're cheap, cheap to shoot, fun, etc. I have looked at the Ruger Mk II, Ruger 22/45 and the Browning Buckmark. I was wondering if you guys have had any experience with any of these and could recommend any. I dont want to spend too awful much, if I can help it.

Thanks...

I have a Ruger MK2 KP512. It uses the MK2 action mounted on a 45 caliber-type of polymer frame. Mine is stainless with a 5.5" bull barrel. This baby feeds CCI Stingers and Remington Viper ammo easily. I really like it, especially the magazine release on the trigger guard, like the centerfire autoloaders. Check it out here: http://www.ruger-firearms.com/hgpages/kp512.html

Matt,

The Ruger 22 is a nice pistol, but it is a little hard to get the bolt back in after cleaning.

I prefer the slant grip to the .45 grip with 5.5 Bull barrel.

IMO, the Browning Buckmark doesn't compare.

For serious target shooting all the Ruger needs is a trigger job (2 lbs.) and a Bomar rear site.

The old High Standards are very nice, but cost about twice as much as a Ruger.

...discounting the 10 odd .22's I had that did nothing special, and did nothing for me...

"New England Firearms revolver, Jennings auto, Beretta M21 auto, Ruger MK II 5.5 SS 'bull barrel', S&W 422 (? the alloy frame auto loader, I may have the model # wrong), Taurus 9 shot revolver, Sumpin' funky by Colt, S&W 'kit' gun, Ruger MK II 'Gov't' model in blue, Browning Buckmark 5.5 field...and a few others that I've forgotten..."

The only one that works really well, and the only one I've kept, is a mid-70's vintage standard 4" blued MKII that'll religeously hit empty shotgun shells (if I do my part) at 40 paces 'open sight'...but only with copper washed Winchester 'super-x' and 'super-x' hollowpoints...(oh, and CCI 'Stingers' too... :) )

(I buy cases of the super-x when I can find it, just to make sure I'll have ammo...)

The MKII I have hangs up badly with PMC or Remington ammo...like 1 in 3 rounds. But, I shot 250 rnds. of super-x through it on Saturday with no hang ups. So, I think it's the projectile shape, vis a vis the feed-ramp, that's the issue here...

Other'n that, a box stock Ruger should do ya fine...but find a round that works with it.

*note, all the other's, minus the revolvers, were ammo sensitive too....and I couldn't get much accuracy out of the revolvers mentioned... :(

Mel

*Rick...what is with this 'cleaning it' stuff? I'm really supposed to clean it? Nah...a 'whore's bath' will do...chamber n' bore only, and 'gobs' of lube for the rest...lol :p

I've had a Buckmark for about 7 years now - great little pistol (standard 5.5" bull barrel model). Better sights than the stock ruger, shot a lot better than the comparable 5.5" ruger, and was about $50 cheaper. The only thing I dont like is having to take the rear sight off for maintenance - but it has never changed zero. Don't sell it short - it is easily comparable to the Ruger.

I'll go along with the recommendation for the Ruger MKII. These are some great little pistols. Even I can make a soda can dance at 25 yards away with one of these. I dont like the 22/45 model though. Something about the slimness of the grip doesnt feel right in my big hand. Also, the 22/45 model uses different magazines. Keep that in mind if you get one.

Another vote for the Mark 2. I have the target model with the 4 inch tapered bull barrel. It has accounted for many, many coons who thought they were safe in the tops of tall trees at night. It does a wicked number on pop cans too.

Mine is just like Mel's, though...jams like crazy on Remington ammo. Feed it what it likes and clean it occasionally, and it just keeps right on ticking.

I am currently in the process of talking a buddy of mine into selling me one of his Smith & Wesson K-22 Target Masterpieces. Sweet little revolver.

One more Ruger fan here. I've got an old Mark I that was stolen from me in a burglary, some goblin used it to rob a bank in Kansas City, left it in the getaway car and eventually I wore down the KCK detectives and got it returned...in rotten shape. But after all that abuse it'll still make coke cans dance. Meanwhile I'd picked up a KMK10 Mark II, in stainless with the 10" bull barrel. I carry this in a shoulder rig and use it to hunt squirrels and rabbits. Might not be everyone's idea of fun, but for me it replaces my scoped 10/22 when I want to walk thru the woods with my hands free, or those days when I need to use a hiking staff when my old football knee injury acts up. It is purely a pleasure to shoot. Take a peek at one here.

Ruger Mk-II is a great 22, I also like the new Walther P-22, has some neat features and is a great plinker.

In a semi-auto, the Ruger MKII with 5 1/2" bull barrel is a great all-round choice ... awesome design, well made, accurate and handy, for not much money.
I love the model 41 Smith, and several of the old High Standards, but they're in a different price category.

The most accurate that I've shot, was the single-shot Contender, made by Thompson/Center, followed by the Ruger MKII Government Model semi-auto.

You might want to consider Ruger's Single-Six Convertible revolver. Great gun in camp, since you have the option of switching cylinders to the considerably more potent .22 magnum rimfire cartridge. Great little gun, and still very reasonably priced. Then there's the Cadillac of .22 revolvers, the S&W model 17 or 617, ... very nice, but more money, and it seems, in my experience, that some are very accurate, and some just ain't. In any case, a .22 handgun is a must have item!! Have fun. :)

Thanks for all of the replies. I'm sorta leaning toward the MK II but I dont want to rule out the Browning just yet. I guess I'll need to find a place to shoot them. Maybe a gun range will have some for rent that I can try out...

Thanks again...

the ruger mrk II or any other ruger semi auto pistol is far superior to the browning buckmark....you can find a gun to gun test on guntests and they also found the ruger superior....dont waste your time and money with this particular browning and buy quality the first time...you also might want to look at the sig trailsider....barrel is by hammerli and if the one i shot is any indication of the rest of the .22 line sig is offering you cant go wrong with this pistol either

best thing to do is to get people who have the particular guns you are interested in letting you shoot 50 or so rounds and then decide

Nice pistol...

I went to the gun shop and saw the new Walther. the P22. It is really lightweight and fits my hand very well. It has a shorter barrel, but you can buy a longer 'target' barrel for it pretty reasonably. Has anyone else had any experience with the Walther? I am leaning towards the MK II but the Walther sure is nice.

Copfish, I heard someone saying that the p22 "didn't shoot good" but they never said why. Are you happy with yours?

I've had Rugers, Smith & Wessons (revolvers and semi-autos)
Taurus, Berettas, Phoenix etc. My two Buckmarks and my Sig
Trailside shoot as well as any of them. Am partial to the Sig
though. BTW the Walthers are not getting very good reviews
on the rimfire forums and the grips are waaay too small for my hands.

I have a P22, just keep it real clean and feed it good ammo (obvious things to do, but the P22 is finicky).....the trigger is something to be desired though, thats what most people complain about. Also heard of a few with the hammer failing to lock back.

You can't lose with a Ruger though (have a 50th Anniv Mark II).

Not a great photo

I must be lucky, my P-22 shoots best with Wildcat. Not a problem except the muzzle-weight loosened up, some loc-tite and off to the range I went. I also have a Glock 22 with the Advantage Arms kit. Great shooter too.
