.22 pistols...

Matt,

A few weeks ago I shot next to a guy at a steel match ( http://www.valdosta.edu/~dboyd/LSRA/22Plates.html ) who was using the P22. He had Fish's problem with the muzzle weight. He moved the front sight from the muzzle weight back to the slide. Also had some jams that probably could have been cured by changing ammo. Cool lookin' gun and he loved the way it fit his hand.

I am about to get a new .22 pistol.

My favorite is the ruger mark II with a bull barrel but I also love the 10 shot Smith 617 revolver. Hard to choose

I dont like the .45 grip on the 22/45. I was very excited by the prospect of the Walther P22 but the dern grip is way too small and reliability reports have NOT been encouraging. Have no experience with the new High Powers.

The best advice of course is to shoot a few.

I'm the odd man out here since I am definitely not a Ruger fan. My vote goes to the Hi-Standard Supermatic Citation Trophy model. I finally had to replace th sear after about 20K rounds. But it was kinda neat having a fully auto .22 pistol for awhile. If I'm not mistaken, Hi-Standard is back in business. You can find a Mitchell which was made from the same tooling on the aftermarket for around $225. Quite a deal given the quality of the piece. The real deal can go upwards of $650.00 to $900 depending on condition and whether or not the seller knows they have a true collectible. My .02.

I have to give my vote to HI Standard too!! I have THE VICTOR model and it shoots like a hand rifle...

Matt, they are not all cheap. ;)

Owning both of these fine guns, I am casting my vote for the Ruger MKII. I have owned it longer, shot more rounds through it, and never had one problem out of it. I find myself reaching for it more than the Browning.

For the record, my dad has a rather large gun collection, and his favorite .22 pistol is his standard MKII that he has owned many years.

I have a Ruger MKII gov. target model (non slab-side) and I love it dearly. I am currently looking for a 4" barreled S&W 617 or a 4" Colt Diamondback to complete my .22 pistol/revolver combo. The MKII is, IMO, the quintessential .22 auto - it is the one the virtually all others are compared to.

Are you just not at all interested in revolvers? I have a S&W model 34 with a 4" barrel and it fits small hands (i.e. your offspring) incredibly well. It is about as reliable and durable as any thing out there (of course! is a Smith..an old school Smith)

If you want a 'toy' more for your self than the kids, look at the beauty known as the Colt Diamondback. It is my pride and joy and the one 'toy' i would never part with. The diamondback is in the same price range as the Mammerli/SigArms Trailside, and a tad cheaper than most of older more sought after High Standard.

I have hunted with both revolvers, and plink quite often with them both. No issues of selective ammo, jams, ease of cleaning with no parts to lose(ok im streaching it a bit)... I guess some ppl are wheel-men and others are easily amused :D . If you must have a semi-auto, The Rugers are pretty much the modern standard for which all others are compaired, and is the only .22 auto most experts will even admit comes close to the old High Standard that they grew up with and loved.

I've had a Ruger 22/45 P4 for about five years. I have probably shot at least 2000 rounds through it and it still shoots great. I have had less malfunctions with this pistol than I have had with any other 22 semiauto that I own or have owned. I found the grip on the 22/45 a bit slim so I added a hogue slip-on finger groove grip. To anyone who owns a 22/45 try it with the Hogue slip-on grip and you won't be sorry. I would definitely recommend this pistol to anyone in the market for a 22lr semiauto pistol.

I only have three 22's so far, a Remington 597 rifle, an NAA Mini combo revolver(22LR & 22 Mag) and a Heritage Rough Rider with 6" barrel(single action revolver, both of them are actually and both have 22LR and Magnum cylinders!). I don't really care much for the idea of using rimmed cartridges in a semi-auto, but the only problems I've had with my 597 were due to stuck magazine springs. But I really like revolvers because you can shoot anything in them, from whisper quiet powderless to max loads without worrying. Those Aguila 22 Colibri rounds are lots of fun... Sounds like an air gun so I use them in my basement into a box full of old phone books. I haven't checked them, but I did with the CCI version, and they penetrate about 1/2" into a phone book. The 6" Rough Rider is really nice with the long barrel, but my next 22 will be either a Ruger semi-auto or a S&W 317 airlite. And I definitley recommend the NAA minis. They are just plain fun, but you might want to stick with the LR model. The magnum just wants to fly out of your hand with those puny bird head grips! Once you figure out how to shoot them they are surprisingly accurate even with that little 1" barrel. LR for cheap plinking and then I drop in the magnums to carry at work as a backup for my 38.

I've read maybe 20 threads on this question. The concensus is always the same...

Choose a 5.5" bull or 6 7/8" slabside Ruger Mark II. Or, the 22/45 of the same pistol.

www.22ammo.com to learn about 22 ammo.
www.youngsguns.com to buy the pistol (or local dealer)
A Volquartsen trigger, etc parts upgrade kit will be in mine some day as well.

ps: www.thefiringline.com is the more appropriate place for the question.
(They are down until tomorrow though)

Agreed...but IMO, go for the non slab-side 6 7/8 gov. target model and save $50-$75 or so... I love mine...

Some great posts guys..., and lots of information. I've been wanting to get a small-bore pistol just for kicks for a few years.., and was just too lazy to do the research.., so thank you!

I'm a Ruger guy at heart. Bill's guns offer a lot of bang for th ebuck so to speak. Got a 10-22, 4" Stainless GP100 and a Mini-14 Ranch in stainless. I have to go with what Flotsam said. My buckmark seems to be a nicer gun to me. I've only got the basic 5" model with the rubber grips and it's a great gun. It's never been picky about ammo, shoots like a laser at what I point it at. The buckmark has helped me convert several non shooters because the recoil is not intimidating and it's so accurate that even a beginner can get on the paper with a little simple instruction.

Like Flotsam, the only thing I don't like is the removal of the rear sight to clean it, but like he said as well, it never seems to change the point of impact.

I'm thinking I like the Browning so much, I might have to get one of their 10" bull barrel with the adjustable trigger...:)

I'm sure the MKII will do you fine if that's what you get, but don't discount the Browning.

just my opinion,

jmx
