I want to go hunting for thumper and rocky. I would like to know which brand or model do you guys like? Which do you like bolt action or auto??? If you can tell me why from your EXP. Money is an issue but i still want to buy something good that would last me a life time with proper care. I know that each gun like and shoots best diffrent ammo. But still which ammo do you like best. Im itching to go hunting. Started to look for info for time and area close by to me to go.

ruger 10/22 semi auto

22 sub sonics ammo ..

bolt rifle savage mk2 ,,again sub sonic 22s ammo,,excellent groupings,,accurate rifle

hard to beat a good marlin tube fed bolt action it will take Shorts and longs and will dot i's like no bodies buisness... put lots o bunnies in the pot with mine when I was young

I'd go with a Ruger 10-22. Mine is as accurate as any bolt action 22 I've ever shot.... and it is just plain fun to shoot.

For a semi auto I like a Ruger 10/22 as well.

For a bolt action I think the CZ's are great values for the money. I have an Ultra Lux that I love.

CarpScot i been checking both those rifles out. I like them both and i seems everyone likes them as well. How would you compare the two to each other???

I'll throw in a vote for the Henry lever action with tube magazine. Holds 16 rounds and very accurate.

I also have a 10/22. Love it. Fun to shoot but the Henry is more fun and shoots better than my ruger.

Along that same line, I have the Marlin Golden 39A. It is probably my favorite rifle of all time. It is on the pricey side though, so all the other ones mentioned are good choices too.

I personally own three 10/22's, and the Marlin 60 and all of them have been flawless.

As far as ammo goes, it would be nice to choose the one you want. But, you have no control over the load (like a person that reloads can do) so you are left with what load matches the gun best. When I buy a new 22, I take about 20 different brands of ammo to the range, and group them all. The one that does best is the one that goes hunting.

Sometimes it is not what you expect either. I have high hopes for some of the expensive ammos. But, in more cases than not, good ole Federal hollow points always end up at the top of the list it seems. Velocitors is another one that generally ranks well in my guns.

If you go rabbit hunting would you rather have the auto, bolt action or lever action rifle. The main reason behind the rifle is for hunting. Do you find that you need the auto for the second shoot in case you miss the first one??? Just how accurate of a rifle do you realy need???

If I was going to be walking through the woods for a good while I'd take my Ruger. It shoots well, is relatively lightweight, and I don't have to mess with reloading as often.

As far as pure enjoyment when shooting I'd choose the CZ every time. It is smooth and accurate as all get out. The iron sights on the CZs are great as well. The downside of the Ultra Lux model is that for a .22 it is long and heavy (28.6" barrel). The Trainer CZ model is a better size if you are going to be lugging it around and you won't be sacrificing much in the accuracy department.

If you haven't done so already I would suggest trying out both a semi auto and a bolt action and narrow it down from there. Also, try out as many makers and models as you can because how well a gun suits your body type and personal preferences is really important. A gun that one person loves the feel of may feel horrible in your hands (Yes Dectia I am talking to you!:p).

I'm a believer that if you can't hit what you are aiming at first shot you shouldn't be hunting yet. Spend time at the range until you are really comfortable and accurate.

A good gun should last a lifetime so go for the most accurate one that you can afford.

Brian is right that it is important to find the best ammo for your particular gun. Even two guns of the same model from the same maker can like to shoot different ammo.

Semi-automatic rifles are illegal to own here (God forbid anyone should have one of those dreaded "assault rifles," dontcha know), but I get by quite well with a Ruger MK-III pistol with a 2X scope on it. A little bit harder to shoot, a little bit less accurate, but a whole lot lighter and easier to carry around all day.

the 10/22 is a good basic all around high quality midrange rifle. It's not too fussy about ammo

on the cheaper end the basic Savage .22 auto is *fine*. totally fine.

But I'd go get a used one. If you don't mind the weight of a full sized rifle, and feel comfortable checking for pitting with a flashlight, the Springfield model 87 (M1938 training rifle, Sears Ranger 101-16, also made by other manufacturers) is the bomb.

16 round tube magazine for .22LR in semi-auto, will fire long or short (or LR) as a manual bolt repeater or single shot. Dead simple to fix, clean, and maintain. Accurate, solid, well balanced. It's a 24 inch barrel, this isn't a carbine by any stretch, but it's a Real Hunting .22

There *are* scope mounts, but they can be hard to find. I don't need one for squirrel and larger game at any reasonable range.

Get the 10/22 or the less expensive current model savage repeater, but if you have gun shows locally and want a $60-$80 gun......

Ammo:

I do like heavy subsonics for short range but I have had good results all around with the CCI mini-mag HP and, honestly, I've never had a problem with the winchester Xpert22 cheapo ammo downing animals.

The Ruger 10/22 is a good gun, there are so many upgrades for this model, you can make it look like a tactical beast or a sniper rifle or whatever & you can make them super accurate ! As for BoltAction I'de go with SAVAGE ! no question about it ...Most accurate gun out of the box w/ no mods
SAVAGE MKII w/ hvybbl !

This post is useless without pics. :D

I have the CZ trainer model and love it. The only criticism I have ever heard of their .22s concerns the European stock and the fact that they are not made in the US. Beyond that they are amazingly smooth and solid. They will last your lifetime and most likely that of your children as well.

I like the CZ looks very much. Been looking at the savage II just now and they look good as well, At half the price but the CZ is good looking. Now what is wrong with the CZ stock that you mention Dectia??? Im checking everything you guys tell me about then later this week or next week im going to go to the gun shop to lay me paws on them. It seems from what i read so far there is no benefit in an auto over the bolt action for hunting.

The 10/22's are okay for hunting and plinking. They are actually a blast for rabbit hunting if you use dogs. The stock 10/22's are generally minute of squirrel accurate out of the box. I seldom defend 10/22's. I actually prefer one of the following. :)

Alternative choices: Marlin 39A, CZ 452 or 453, Savage Mark II, TC R-55, Remington 597, Marlin Model 60, or a "used" Remington 541-S or -T.

the least expensive and best value is the Marlim model 60, Ruger 10/22's are Ok, but I don't like the clip. Remington 552 is ultra nice for a longer rifle. The Browning shorties are nice if you have the $$$

Overall value = Marlin model 60

Get you some:thumbup:
