2200 deg thermocouple accurate enough for 100-120f testing of quench oil?

Hey guys,

I have a probe I bought for my forge but since I'm getting my kiln I won't need it. However I need a way to check the oil temperature of my 5 gallon quench bucket w/ heater. Will this probe be accurate enough at lower temps say 50-150F ? My plan is to agitate the oil fairly thoroughly with something clean so as not to contaminate it, then check it with the probe for temperature to see if its ready for quenching.

Or is there a better way to check the temp? Since it will be fairly deep the 12" probe should be good I think, if its accurate enough.

It should be plenty accurate for your purposes.

You actually have (are) a pretty accurate reference temperature at about the mid-point of your intended range.

Try sticking the tip of the probe in your armpit (probably the least accurate, but least uncomfortable/unhygeinic option) for a couple of minutes and seeing what temperature it reads. It should usually show a degree or so below the accepted 98.6 degF, but 95-100 would be more than good enough for checking your oil.

Thanks guys, both good ideas. I'll see how the probe .. probes.. and if it won't work ill grab a kitchen thermometer. I actually need to get a couple oven ones anyway for tempering.. my kitchen oven is nowhere near accurate, its an old junker.
