223/556 Rifle Question

Unless you're wedded to the AR, cruise on over to Czechpoint and check out the Vz58 in 5.56.

Around an even 1k, you'd be hard pressed to do better than this. It's the Sig M400 5.56/.223 MOE Enhanced. Comes with Magpul furniture standard. All I added was an EOTech and the Magpul stubby vertical grip, which only serves to index where your hand grabs the hand guard. Great feed ramps and everything is properly staked. I ran it at a carbine course recently and it kept running great even when filthy and when others' piston guns were failing. Great gun IMO. Gonna shoot it tomorrow in fact.

Win Heger- Hope you get better soon. Wish you a speedy recovery!

Mike157- I think that 50 cal is on everyones list! Only if they weren't so expensive..

svbk556- Thanks for the other considerations. As far as those that you mention, would you say that Colt is just as good as those first manufacturers that you mentioned? As far as the optics were concerned, I was actually looking into the ACOG with the RMR. It just sounds like the best of both worlds for me, what is your opinion?

jbob24 - I do like the idea of these other platforms, mainly the SCAR. But when I start looking into them it just makes me want to get the 17 haha.. As far as upkeep is concerned, how dirty are they and how are they to clean?

MVF - Are the gas piston systems really that much cleaner and easier to clean? If so that would score some major points for me. The one thing I hate about ARs is the pain to clean them.

VA27- Thanks for the recommendation. Never herd of them so I will have to check them out.

Professor- I was actually going to ask if anyone had any experience with the Sigs. I haven't handled one but I see that they are well priced considering its a Sig. Is it still a pain to clean like other ARs?

It's about the same in terms of cleaning. I cycled 1k rounds before cleaning mine without any malfunctions, however. Despite what they say, many DI guns can run fine dirty. That said, there's a piston gun on my wish list. Why not have one of each, right? :)

Short answer is YES. After a full day of shooting I can pull the bolt carrier and it doesn't even look dirty. I was amazed. All I do now is clean the barrel and make sure everything still looks lubed, although occasionally I'll wipe everything down and relube it just because. I don't know if I could ever go back.

if it was me it would be a ruger SR556 with the 14.5 barrel then i would change the stock to a magpul.

I reviewed the top link I referred you to and dug up the link to the thread where the person gives a great over view of what to look for in an AR15. The rest of the original link has good info also but this particular thread helped me out quite a bit.

I don't know much at all about the Barret (except I'd love to have a .50 cal some day) at all. Thanks. Mike

There's is a lot of good info in that article. It's what I based my mid length build on. All Bravo parts.

Hi guys,

I am looking into purchasing a rifle in the 223/556 caliber. I am mainly looking for a complete gun. Not really looking into building it on my own, there are just way to many options out there and it would take way to much research to decide exactly what I wanted.

I am looking for something with a flat rail on top so that I can mount an ACOG. Of course reliability is a main factor as well as front rails in order to add a light. This is not going to be a competition rifle, this is mainly going to be used for range outings and home defense.

If you guys know of any good options out there in the $0-$1900 range please let me know. I would greatly appreciate first hand accounts and any pictures if you have any. Please state what you would consider the positives and negatives to the firearm that you are recommending.

Thanks in advance.

Get a HK other than its alot out of your price range there is no negative, THE BEST RIFLE out there, Overpriced? yes. but still is the best

Kifeter, apologies for the delayed response. Colt is a fine choice. It is used with confidence by LE and military and will give you many years of dependable service. Good/better is such a subjective term - hence open to debate. Noveske does have a better barrel - Fit and finish is better on a LWRC -LMT and BCM have their respective strengths. As far as the optic - If you are going to use the weapon for home defense, target acquisition speed is paramount. Keep it simple, Eotech or Aimpoint are great choices. Im questioning whether or not you'll fit the ACOG and rifle into your budget. Sink your money into the rifle first. Piston vs. direct impingement - The only reason I have not switched to gas piston is that in a worst case scenario, parts for direct impingement will be had much easier.

I have to say that at the moment I am leaning more towards a piston system due to the ease of cleaning. I really hate cleaning my Colt HBAR, and for that reason it hardly ever gets to see the range.

Mr.LCV - I have to agree with you on the fact that HK makes some really nice rifles. I own a USC that I converted into a UMP and have an Eotech on it. I love it, just looking for something a little different. BTW, have the prices for the 416 sky rocketted lately? Last I checked they were around 2500-3k, now I see one bidding up to 3700?? WOW

svbk556 - I understand your point on the optics now. This is not going to be my go to home defense weapon, I am just looking to have the option if the need ever arises, but I would also like to be able to shoot out to farther lengths. Thanks for the breakdown on the manufacturers. Do you have any experience with the FN Scars?

Not the civilian version - check out US Optics SN-5. It has 1-4x magnification. Couple of my scout sniper buddies swear by it on an AR platform.

Surprised nobody has mentioned the Barrett REC7, true it is at the high end of the price range, but it is a runner. I'm not a dedicated AR guy, but I think for a piston gun it's one of the better out of the box carbines. Daniels Defense quad rail, Magpul stock and 2 mags standard. Add sights/optic as desired. They are also unfortunately tough to come by.

if you build a game gun, then you can work on your shooting skills... most anybody's forged receiver (ArmaLite shown) will have a mil spec anodizing and be of 7075 T6 ... a good bolt carrier that has a shrouded firing pin, and a bolt of Carpenter 158 or better that is magnetic particle inspected and properly staked (add an "O" ring around the extractor spring)....chrome lined chrome moly barrel.... 16" is a convenient length without having to pin on a comp (16"RRA mid length shown)... full float tube, that you can add a rail if you want...shown is KAC fore grip used for a mono pod... good trigger (RRA NM in this case)... ergometrics that fit...like an A1 stock and grip with sufficient length to place finger in proper position...modified Miculek comp and 4.2 oz buffer not seen...TA31F on top with red chevron using Bindon Aiming Concept is just like a dot up close, and this rifle with 55grain S&B will hold 4" at 400m (5 shot groups)...

The Ruger SR-556E is a really nice basic piston-driven AR. You can fire a lot more shots through a piston-driven action before it absolutely requires cleaning. Of course, in absolute terms, the amount of gunk you have to clean out of your gun averaged over the number of shots will be about the same as with a direct gas impingement system. However, in a piston driven gun that gunk doesn't interfere with operation as soon.
