Federal American Eagle for me.

I use Wolf in my AK-47s (very cheap stuff, you know), but that stuff used to be laquer covered they say (don't know if it still is), and maybe could gunk up your internals, so I never used it in one of my ARs.

Pics help any thread.

I use PMC- I bought it on sale at Outdoor Marksman earlier this year. 100% reliable. It seems to be pretty accurate for para-military FMJ. I get about 3 MOA accurary with it, using iron sights out of my 20" AR. PMC is made on the same assembly line that makes South Korean service ammunition (I also have some 1978 vintage South Korean service ammo, which functions well too).

I shot some Remington without any problems, though for some people's AR's it is a little too soft to reliably function the action- or so they say.

I used to avoid Wolf like the plague... then with raw metal prices skyrocketing and military activity doing the same... well you all know what happened to prices.

Now I buy Wolf and haven't had any issues (knock on wood). It's dirty and not very accurate, but I guess you get what you pay for in life: it all depends on what you need out of your practice ammo.

Wolf no longer uses the lacquer: it's a polycoat now, although it's up for debate whether that really makes a difference. In any regard, Box O Truth has an article regarding Wolf in AR's that some may find informative. Short answer: scrub your chamber after shooting Wolf :)

bless its heart my bushy wouldn't know what to think if it got american made ammo. I've put around 1000 rounds through the old girl without a hitch. depending on who you ask it's either pretty good or it will blow up your gun and make your car leak oil. for the price it's okay.

Anyone use the Barnul ammo?

I bought a couple hundred rounds of their Silver Bear ammo, to use at local pinshoots this summer. Unfortunately, since those shoots got cancelled, I sold the ammo without shooting any of it, so I can't report. However, the price was pretty good- about 7 cents a round less than I paid for my PMC. I chose Silver Bear over Wolf (or Brown Bear) because I would prefer not to introduce laquer/polymer coating into my AR for a little bit of savings.

I generally try to avoid linking to other forum websites, but here is a good
approve/neutral/disapprove for pretty much every brand of .223/5.56 ammo you can think of. You can read detailed reviews of each by clicking the brand name (in blue to the right side- if it says 'archived' viewing is allowed only by ARFCOM team members).

My 1:7 twist likes PMC 55gr FMJBT Bronze. Got 4000 rounds of it now...

shot a lot of barnaul ammo out of an sks and a mosin nagant mod 44. exc out of both.

i shoot 55gr in my 1-7" bbl colt AR15 sometimes and while accuracy isnt as good as heavier stuff its not bad, never have heard its hard on the bbl either.

at the range i usually shoot whatevers cheapest, or whatever i have the most of, black hills is good imho.

if your 1-7" bbl shoots 55's good try some black hills 77gr ya wont believe it lol.

.

Yeah I googled for a while but couldn't find anything about damage...must be a case of the dumbs... :o :D

I had thought the lighter grain in the quicker twist rate was causing quicker than normal rifling wear, but again couldn't find anything other than the echoes in my brain.

yeah i hadnt heard that one before, i really researched them too when i got the thing it was the 1st 1-7" bbl i had ever seen, was ~ '92 or so IIRC, i had never heard of that prior, all of them are 1-9" now, IIRC, i know my post ban colt tac carbine is 1-9", i dont know why they quit with the 1-7" bbls but they did, colt anyway.

to be honest i havent seen many 1-7", most are the earlier twist or 1-9" now.

if the 55's were hard on 'em that wouldnt be good i have shot a lot of 55's outta mine, like i say when i got it heavy 5.56 wasnt common at all.

1:9 is the compromise "all arounder" for ok accuracy across the the lower grains up to 68-69.

The 1:7 works best for the heavier stuff 77 grain, especially in freezing temp conditions.

.223 and 5.56 are too expensive to be consider "range ammo" for me now. I only shoot it in rifle, 3-gun, and multi-gun matches or in classes. On the rare occasions I get to shoot outside of those, it's going to be .22 LR from now (with a Ruger 10/22).

I've been meaning to invest in a .22lr conversion for my AR. I already have dedicated .22 rifles, but practicing cheap with the AR (and shooting it on the indoor range) would be nice.

I ended up buying a case of Sellier and Belloit 55gr fmj, got a great deal about $7 a box and I love their pistol ammo
