I have a Tikka T3 (left hand) in 308 and it's the rifle I deer hunted with this fall. THey are very nice rifles. Mine has a Leupold VX-2 3X9 scope mounted on it, so I have just shy of $1000 invested in the whole rig. It's a fantastic gun that handles well and is light enough to carry around while moving all day.
As far a caliber choice goes, it comes down to this: if you ever plan to hunt game animals (as opposed to varmits) then you need the 308. IMO it is irresponsible to hunt deer with a 223 under anything other than survival circumstances. If you want to (slightly) reduce ammo costs and will only be shooting targets at the range then the 223 is a better choice, keeping in mind that the supply of cheap 223 surplus ammo isn't what it used to be because of the two wars we are currently engaged in.
