.....

That wouldn't be considered concealed, but you would probably look pretty goofy. JMHO

Anyone who calls a fixed blade "concealed" because it's in a knife sheath -- unless the knife sheath is a wallet or something -- is a nutjob.

But M1210 is right, you're probably going to look pretty goofy.

Probably not a good idea. If the cops see you yank a knife out of your collar, they're likely to blast your arse first and ask questions later.

I don't think it's worth the risk, BlackRazor. A concealed fixed blade in California can be charged as a felony. All you need is for a knife-knowledgable cop to notice the chain around your neck and see the knife and sheath print through your shirt when the angle is right, and you're in big trouble. Or, you could be in an accident or have a medical emergency and the knife could be discovered when you're unable to change its position to outside your shirt.

Is getting that knife from under your shirt really that much faster than drawing and opening a folder clipped to your pants?

BlackRazor:

And I shouldn't simplify so much. It isn't easy sometimes just to pick up and leave. I see how bad Cali is. Is it too late to change? Possibly. It needs to be changed from within, but is it too Liberalized and Socialized to get better? You tell me.

I dunno. I feel for ya'll over there. I hope for the best.

Brian

BlackRazor I'm confused now, do you want to carry concealed or not? If not then I would think a neck knife is a poor choice. It's just that it's really subseptable to being grabbed and then used on you (assuming you go to areas where that might happen), plus I'd imagine it'll get in the way.

If you want to go concealed or even if you don't, check out On/Scene Tactical, I've got an order pending at the moment. The sheaths can be used either concealed or not and are pretty low profile.

Quick question for those in Cali, say you've got a belt sheath on which ends say half way down your thigh, and then you put a long coat on (maybe it's raining) are you going to get into trouble for having a concealed weapon if you get stopped by a cop?

Depends what you wear but you could do this http://www.mnsi.net/~nbtnoel/moran.jpg or this http://www.mnsi.net/~nbtnoel/moransob.jpg

maybe have it upside down at an angle on your belt or totally inverted on your belt on your strong side so you just reach down, grab the handle and pull the blade down to get it out. Like this http://www.mnsi.net/~nbtnoel/bushman.jpg only upside down and with a smaller blade. If you were worried about it falling out you could get a small strap and push-stud added for security.

Just some ideas.

If it's just the method of carry that you really like over the want for a fixed blade you can get a neck sheath for some folders made out of kydex (I know that I've seen some for Syderco's). Or if you were into building one yourself, you could get the materials for about $10 and make one for you favorite folder.

And, depending on where you live and or travel to, some cities have their own laws that override the states law. I know that L.A. does not allow any fixed blade carry concealed or not.

It's time to take your State in it's pathetic "state" to the U.S. Supreme
Court & sue for "seditious libel"!
( literally "treason" -or- infringement of the U.S. Constituition :() I find it shameful that in a "state" rife with "gangbangers" that "common firearms"
or knives bother them!

AET ;)

Knife control laws are silly everywhere, not just California. At least here you can carry a folder of any dimesion concealed. The fixed blade law is sort of silly, but compare it to where I have lived for that last fifteen years, Maryland.

There, any blade carried with the intent to use as a weapon, concealed or openly displayed, is a felony. Guess who gets to decide if you are carrying a knife as a weapon? That's right, your buddy, the cops. If they want to hassle you or charge you for carrying a gerber LST in your pocket, they can. If you carry a fixed blade openly, same thing. It is a complete BS law. How the heck can a cop tell your intent? Mind reading? How you are dressed? The last time you shaved? What?

I actually prefer to have carry laws more defined, not that I agree with California's or any other states restrictions. People kill people. Knives are just tools. A knife may be a letter opener one minute, a life saving device the next, and an lethal weapon in the hands of a someone intent on hurting someone. It is impossible to define the object as having only one function. Knives are just things. I just wish the law everywhere understood that fact.

I agree. It is all subject to a LEO's opinion and whim. I say carry any knife that you want, and if you you don't do anything illegal it won't be an issue. (defending yourself from a violent crime is not illegal).
P.S.- don't go looking for trouble either.

Blackrazor,
Check out the Knife Law categories. There is a alot of great info on Kalifornia law there. Also the moderator is a great. Any concealed fixed blade carry is a felony in Kalifornia. You might consider a small 3-4" fixed blade with horizontal sheath. You can do almost anything and drive or sit with no problems.

Why not not just carry a nice DDR 7" folder :) Or better yet a nice Glock or Sig Sauer? It's only a misdemeanor to carry firearm.:D Alot better than a felony. On the serious side a folder will draw less attention. Even though more people are notice clips on pockets. Best to go with inside the waistband for more concealibility. You have to know how to carry depending on where you are going. Its easy to conceal 3-4 folders and have them ready for any hand or position. The main thing is not to get hassled. You really need to know your state laws and rights before you decide. Good luck fellow knife nut.

Hey Robert,

I wish I could have a neck knife, too. It's really frustrating. I'd rather have a Spyderco Perrin or Temperance fixed blade in a belt sheath, but a neck knife would be great as well. Unfortunately, we can't have a concealed fixed blade in Calif. of any length, and there are problems with carrying a fixed blade in a belt sheath here (unwanted attention even if it's legal, blade length issues in some cities under local law).

Here's the deal with "concealed dirks or daggers" under California law. Penal Code Section 12020 says:

"12020. (a) Any person in this state who does any of the following
is punishable by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year
or in the state prison:
...
(4) Carries concealed upon his or her person any dirk or dagger."

Note that it says up to a year in county jail--this is a misdemeanor charge/conviction--or in the state prison. The state prison part is 16 months, 2 years, or 3 years (judge's choice), which is a felony charge/conviction.

I highly recommend you read all of Jim March's California knife laws page. It's a fantastic resource!

Here's a Bladeforums thread where I made some posts that will be of interest to you:

Also, here's how you can quickly look up California laws: Go to http://www.sen.ca.gov click on Legislation, then on Codes.

...have a folder, over engineered, liner lock, spine lock & bolsterlock, make it un-ergonomic for a folder, but, just what you'd want in a fixed blade! A 1/2" pivot pin, no washers, awful action, no nail nick/thumb stud, & keep it in the open position, in a sheath!

Or am I just a Limey fool:rolleyes:
