a coworker has a mercator k55 that he used the $hit out of and sharpened it to near death, the lock doesn't even work anymore. last time i saw it i told him to "retire it and go buy a new one".

Those Mercators are really cool!

+1 for Condor Bushlore. It's not stainless (neither is his old hickory) but it's 1075 steel is plenty tough. It's gotta be tough because they also make machetes out of the same stuff. The Bushlore is scandi ground, but since he's gonna take it to the wheel anyway, it doesn't matter.

If he's just going to grind on it again, then get him a brand new Old Hickory. Also, let him know that if he heats up the steel significantly, or sees sparks come off the grinder, the edge's durability is ruined.

Also, stropping does, in fact, remove metal. That is how stropping works. It only removes a little more than the bare minimum required to resharpen an edge. Informing him of this fact probably wouldn't help, though, if he doesn't understand that hot grinding and filing ruins edge durability.

How about one of these? It's a Klein duct board knife and can also be had with a bright orange handle or wood handle. It's made for the rough stuff.

They're also made by Klenk. Since I don't know if cross forum posting is allowed here I'll just say you can find a link to a thread about the Klenk knives if you google "Klenk Murder Knife."

Id like to have one of those for my pegboard.

Get the man something inexpensive if he is determined to ruin it by grinding/filing. Moras are hard to beat in the value department.
