25 days in the snow sebenza test

It spent 25 days in a driveway in ME. Two snow storms and probably driven over a few times.

Here's pix, much better shape then I expected. The blade rust isn't very deep and there are a couple of mars on the front slab. Back slab is still perfect. Lockup is actually fine, there is a slight catch or two when swinging open, probably debris, but it's still 97% as smooth as before I lost it.

Glad you found it! Is that an s30v blade? And are you going to send it to the spa?

I think it is s30v, spa trip probably not, it's been customized by Tom Mayo, don't know what would happen if I sent it back to CRK?

That looks better then I thought it would, after spending 25 days in the snow!! Are you sending to the spa?

I had not realized it was a Mayo...man, bet you're glad to have it back in any condition! :)

yeah I'm glad it's back. It wouldn't have been the end of the world.

I would still send it back, even though it is a Sebbie customized by Tom Mayo. Or see if Tom Mayo can do something.

I'll take a whack at it. It's not that bad. Only if there is significant edge damage would I send it to someone.

I don't know DH. It looks pretty rough.....:(
You should just send it to me and I'll see what I can do with it:D ....If nothing else, I can give it a proper burial;)

BTW, Glad you have it back!!!!!!!!!!!

If you think about it, 25 days in the snow shouldn't have rusted it at all!
Snow, being frozen water, that is.
AFAIK, water at below freezing temperatures, will not cause a knife to rust.
The rust was probably caused by melting snow, so it is impossible to know how long it was exposed to actual water, and I'm sure that the cool weather helped slow the oxidation process.
I'd bet 5 days in a cup of water at around 70 degrees, and it would look much, much worse.

Not sure how to keep this from a scientific treatise :D. But it is not true that water has to be liquid in order to help corrosion along. It really has nothing to do with solid or liquid, but in many ways you are right. As liquid, it will wet the surface much more efficiently (obviously) and you are also right on the temperature playing a roll, warmer temperature helping the oxidization process along, but on the other hand, snow allows for access of air. My biggest concern would have been the salt. Even if the driveway isn't salted, the tires will drag some in from the road.

MacTech tested S30V in a fog chamber for several days and it held up very well.

Either way, I am glad (and amazed) that you found it, Dave. Should clean up just fine.

Doesn’t steel need water and oxygen to rust?! Snow = water = h2o, but is the not-constant and not-direct contact from water (by snow) accelerates the process because there is more oxygen. Not that I know, it just popped in my head.

Nice to see you found your knife back!

Congratulations in finding your knife. I lost a very cheap one I didn’t even like a few years ago and it bothered me a lot. I think it looks pretty good considering all the crud found in snow on a driveway.

crk would take good care of it-i had a customized small sebenza by a bf member i sent in and they commented on its return about how they liked it-so have no worries about sending it in-be specific if you want to keep the scratch's and just get the blade snazzied back up-lol

pantographic knife?

I don't know what that is.

Actually it's almost completely cleaned up now, flitz and a paper towel, took care of the blade. I took it apart and cleaned out the grit and relubed. The handle still has the mars on it, no biggie.

I'm about to use the sharpmaker on it, but I think it passed the test. I'll probably get some updated pix tomorrow.
