The knife was available with a rubber handle, 420HC blade, and nylon sheath.
It was also available with a resin impregnated rosewood handle, ATS-34 blade, and leather sheath.

Then, a couple of years ago, Buck switched the steel in the rosewood handle version from ATS-34 to 154CM (not CPM154). ATS-34 and 154CM are nearly equivalent products. ATS-34 is made by Hitachi in Japan and 154CM is made by Crucible Metals in the USA.

The rosewood handle/154CM blade version is still available and is a current model.

I believe the rubber handle 420HC version is still available and current as well.

Hope this helps. :)

Hi AP,

All I can say is get you that 277...you will love it. 277 or 279 or 278 those Alphas come in all shapes and configurations. They open as smooth as warm butter and have a very Ergo fit for me!!!

Here are a few of the Alphas that I have...got a new one with stag & blade cut out...just have not taken a photo of it yet.

What jb said. The 277 is a great knife and falls in my top 5 favorites.

The alphas were also made with walnut handles a few years back, but have since been discontinued.

Is the 154CM a Bos treated blade. Have the stamp?

I know the ATS 34 is.

Just felt like sharing. 276 from the First Run

OK - different branches of the same retailer have 277's in Rosewood - one has ATS-34 BOS heat treated ( heard nothing but good about these) - other has newer units with 154 BOS heat treated blades - any diff? Also- have noticed that QC isn't the greatest on the units I've examined - one had the liner all the way over on a brand new never used example - another has a truelly impressively asymmetric grind - would expect this on a PRC knife - am surprised to find it on a USA product. Would suggest these are probably worth buying at a local retailer - 'cause you can open a few boxes to find a good one ( marred wood handles don't bother me - i'd rather have the rubber scales off the cheaper 420 steel versions- but a lot of the rosewood scales are way less than perfect.)Basic design is pretty damm overbuilt -except for the liner tab itself -given that nothing else on this knife is going to shift position - this is probably not a problem.Anybody got a year or two of EDU in on this design?
Q: Anybody beadblasted one of these to knock down the shine?

So - I went out and bought two of the 277's with ATS-34 and Rosewood scales. Both are BOS marked - but one's blade has a "T" after the 277 on one side of the blade and has both BOS and ATS-34 plus USA on the other side of the blade.2nd. unit - has a badly ground tip and cutting edge no T and no USA - does this mean anything at all to anyone?
Really prefer the rubber scales - is this something you can get from Buck as a separate item or do I have to buy a 279 and scavenge them off of that?
Thanks for the help - I keep trying to stay away from big folders- but the damm things just plain work better than their little bros. and sisters.

The T after the 277 is the year of manufacture stamp for 2003

why your 2nd 277 has no USA or model/year stamp,,, maybe someone else will know. Are there any symbols on it other than Buck?

Check Buck's website for the rubber grips, that you can swap for the rosewood. The rubber grips come with new locktite treated screws and wrench. At least ones I have did.

The 277 (2007) I have with the Bos treated blade has the "shine" and brown leather sheath. The 279 (2004) I have has rubber scales, blade with "shine", no Bos stamp and a black nylon sheath.
