Here is the first 2 brick forge for sale featuring the "Turbo Vortex" design developed one Saturday evening last August at the Midwest Knifemakers Supply hammer-in in Mankato. A few well-known makers liked my forge design, but recommended only one change: the angle of the gas intake. Instead of the traditional 90° perpendicular intake, it has been changed to 60°, so it both swirls completely in the chamber, as well as vortexing from the rear to the front. This gives a very efficient combustion. The back flap is easily removable, it just hangs on a pin. The forge is made from two insulating firebricks cut in half and stuffed in a 5" square tube with 1/4" thick wall. It's very heavy and stable, and the 6" channel used as the base allows it to sit solidly on top of an anvil. For those of you who, like me, store your anvil outside this lets you cover the anvil and forge together under one garbage bag.

I've run the forge for two hours to make sure there are no problems with it.

Asking $200 + $40 shipping

* 2½" diameter round chamber
* 1 1/16" diameter intake accommodates most commercial burners
* 12" long 5" square ¼" walled body
* 6" channel for the base fits nicely over an anvil for easy storage
* 12" adjustable tool rest
* removable back flap allows working on longer blades, swords, etc.
* weighs about 20 lbs., very stable
* 2300° insulating firebrick
* 48" bulk to torch hose included
* Oh, and it has a nice handle on top making it one of the most portable units out there.

Includes forge, burner, and 48" hose to connect to 20lb propane tank

Looks like a neat design! Just curious--is there a way to replace the firebricks once they start to crack/crumble?

Yes. Five minutes with an angle grinder and the tack welds holding the back plate can be removed. Replace the bricks and weld the plate back on. I'm looking into bolting the plate on in future versions, but the ¼" wall lets you use only so big a bolt, and the smaller the bolt the harder it is to tap.

G'day Charles,

Like your design on this. Why dont you hinge the back wall and have a hasp and pin on the underside. That way it would make changing bricks easy.

Just an idea mate.

Matt

I'm just finishing the next one and the front bolts on with the back welded on. It's not like you're going to need to change the bricks very often.

And I present to you my prototype, 2B2BF (2 brick 2 burner forge)
Huge construction improvements all around. The front is bolted on and the back welded, as I previously mentioned.

What's with the dates on these old thread being messed up? I certainly didn't make the last post on 11-05-11. It was probably back in September or earlier.

Looking for something like this. If it is still available next week I will take it. Gotta wait for some money to appear. Also really liking the proto. The Made In USA fits in nicely.

Actually this one, the original, is still available. It's already in a box waiting to ship. The proto isn't ready yet, I haven't drilled out the chamber or tested yet. Maybe soon.

Thanks Zaph. I will be in touch next week like i said. If it goes before then I understand. Maybe I can get the next one if that is the case.

Woohoo! I just got an order for five of these from an online retailer!!!!! While this one took me a couple weeks to build, it only took me a couple days to build the batch of five. I know you already like the price, but they are finished and I'm in a really good mood about this. So I'll knock $25 off the price for you Ob1korobi, it's now only $175 + shipping. It's not quite the same as the newer ones that I'm building, but it's still very solid and functionally the same. It does have a slightly heavier base and supports, however.

Sweet Zaph. Congrats on the contract. If everything works out next week I will put in the order with you for that price. I just need to confirm some funds before I leave on a trip. Thanks for the update.

Zaph would this forge make a good beginning forge? What temperature does it get to,and is it ready to use when you get it other than propane

This forge is aimed at beginners as a fully functional small forge. It is very efficient and goes through propane slowly compared to the bigger forges. I've had no problem forging with it for 4 hours at a hammer in and have had no problem getting 1/2" round steel orange hot. It's not hot enough for forge welding, however. It is ready to use, just attach propane and an anvil & hammer.

If you made the front and back panels as an end cap/box lid set up, you could thread and bolt through the sides with almost any size bolt you wanted with much less fuss or use a loop and pin like previously mentioned and never need to tap the face plates at all.

Hi Zaph. Well I thought things would get better for me in the money department but once the holidays came and went I had nothing left for this. I will check back again in the future and hopefully I can get something from you. Take care.
