Still going for extra points because no buck yet. My hunting partner and I were checking trail cams yesterday, and I decided I needed to hunt my stand in the woods as opposed to on the power line or the field. The only problem is there have been whole seasons when nobody went down in the woods without spooking deer on the way in, as has been the case the two times that stand has been hunted this season. But then, we usually get in before daylight. I said I guess I should sneak in. He said "You'll never fool them. Just go ahead and bust in; maybe they'll let you pass." I'm thinking, I've done it a few times before, always when I could somewhat see. So when we drove up and parked this morning, we stayed in the truck talking for probably 20 minutes, until visibility was pretty decent in the woods. I started slipping ever-so-quietly down toward my stand. Got past the first set of white oaks--nothing. Hadn't gone much further and see something standing in the road ahead . Forgot my bipod at home, so I stepped sideways to a nearby tree and put my scope up. It's a hog. I watched and he took one step to my left and then turned to face me. This one was alone, so I'm almost guaranteed it's a boar. Usually groups of sows and pigs are so noisy themselves they are oblivious to the world. But this guy was walking quietly along sucking up acorns. They're pretty wary, and have excellent smell. I shot him in the head and anchored him. At the shot, a deer came boiling out of the brush not 25 yards to my left and evidently hadn't known I was there, because it ran toward me, stunned. Guess I scared it pretty good. I know it surprised me. I quickly chambered another round but could not positively identify the sex with it moving and in such heavy cover, in low light, so I let it pass. This is not a buck, but hey--it's a boar. Even better, you might say.
