2nd Annual Knife Hunter Big Buck Contest! Winner is Izhmash!

Still going for extra points because no buck yet. My hunting partner and I were checking trail cams yesterday, and I decided I needed to hunt my stand in the woods as opposed to on the power line or the field. The only problem is there have been whole seasons when nobody went down in the woods without spooking deer on the way in, as has been the case the two times that stand has been hunted this season. But then, we usually get in before daylight. I said I guess I should sneak in. He said "You'll never fool them. Just go ahead and bust in; maybe they'll let you pass." I'm thinking, I've done it a few times before, always when I could somewhat see. So when we drove up and parked this morning, we stayed in the truck talking for probably 20 minutes, until visibility was pretty decent in the woods. I started slipping ever-so-quietly down toward my stand. Got past the first set of white oaks--nothing. Hadn't gone much further and see something standing in the road ahead . Forgot my bipod at home, so I stepped sideways to a nearby tree and put my scope up. It's a hog. I watched and he took one step to my left and then turned to face me. This one was alone, so I'm almost guaranteed it's a boar. Usually groups of sows and pigs are so noisy themselves they are oblivious to the world. But this guy was walking quietly along sucking up acorns. They're pretty wary, and have excellent smell. I shot him in the head and anchored him. At the shot, a deer came boiling out of the brush not 25 yards to my left and evidently hadn't known I was there, because it ran toward me, stunned. Guess I scared it pretty good. I know it surprised me. I quickly chambered another round but could not positively identify the sex with it moving and in such heavy cover, in low light, so I let it pass. This is not a buck, but hey--it's a boar. Even better, you might say.

No hunting for me this year.

Sure appreciate you doing great stuff like this giveaway though.

Maybe next year.

I'm pretty bummed the anti gun folk got a terrible law passed just this week here in WA.

Have a blast Garth.

Slam me for no buck if you wish, but this is too much fun. My hunting partner is a little under the weather today but did go yesterday morning and check trail cams while I was at work. It's difficult deciding where to hunt alone when you haven't been in a week and there are six spots to choose. Mostly this season I've had the deer show up on camera while I was hunting elsewhere. A few good bucks have showed on camera but none is interested in dating yet it seems. So I'll keep filling the freezer and hoping.

Although the RS held its edge quite well with my two previous kills, it was more than a little difficult slicing through ribs. So this morning I expectantly brought my bruiser Muck. Talk about a knife that doesn't get the attention it deserves. No contest, no question, no doubt about it--this one excelled at slicing ribs. I didn't try chopping or batoning through them because it wasn't needed. The blade and edge geometry are perfect for the task.

No slamming here...

Im envious. :D

You cant eat the horns:thumbup:

Isn't that the truth? If anyone wants to trade a pork shank for steel, I've got you covered. Ha! Let's change things up a bit, little bit of different background. They still won't let me get to the stand, hanging around the white oaks around dawn. Otherwise same, same. This may be part of the reason I'm not seeing bucks. Maybe.

Spent some time around the campfire at night and with a rifle in the day.......contest entry pics soon to follow :)

Was fortunate enough to draw a controlled hunt muledeer tag for the area around the Seven Devils and Hells Canyon Wilderness here in Idaho this year.

Beautiful country

But rugged!

Idaho in the foreground, Oregon on the other side of the canyon

A young buck trying to get my trigger finger itchy

Please excuse the spotting scope/cell camera pic at high magnification. But it looked like this at 12x

Day Four, finally a shooter :D .........sure glad he was on one of the more gentle slopes ;)

My go-to belt knife, a slightly modded rodent trail

Handles the rib splittin' just fine

Had to give the elmax a little love, too. I think this one's going to be a keeper

And then off to check out some of the local attractions. Good luck all!!
