2nd knife, 1st grind

This is the 2nd knife I've made, and the first using my grinder. I made it for my girlfriends father, but I made sure he was well aware it could be a total piece of crap. I used a small brake drum forge I made to heat the blade for quenching, and I used some nasty old diesel oil for that, and I really liked the finish I got out of doing so. This has been all sanded down to 600. Someone told me I may have overheated the steel, and the finish may be a result of that and not the oil I used. Anyway it sharpened ok (I think) time will tell how I did for real though. Thoughts and comments much appreciated. Thanks for looking

Blade is 1/8 01
Handle is Rosewood with brass pins

Since you seem to have a lot of skill, look in the stickies for plans for HT ovens and PID forges. The profile is nice, and the work looks clean. I suspect you overheated the steel too. I saw a similar look in some O1 when I started out last winter before I got my pyrometer.

Pretty good looking knife. Shape is really nice.
I am thinking the blade was overheated, too. Any oils markings would have sanded off long before you got to a 600 grit finish. The edge may tend to chip a bit easy, but it probably will cut fine.
The little stub of tang sticking out at the butt seems strange. It would be better if it was ground flush with the rest of the handle. It looks like a small lanyard stub that you forgot to put the slot in.

The finish is as tempered and you sanded to 600 before HT, or the other way around?

In any case, it's a really nice profile and execution. I'm wondering about the tab though. Only reasons that I can think of having one is to hammer with, to throw sparks off a ferro rod or as Stacy said, a lanyard slot or hole. Oh, and maybe as a glass breaker. What am I missing?

I cleaned it up by hand with 600 after heat treat as well yes, the stub at the back was more so for beating on things I think.. I don't really like it either now. I just always find myself hitting things with the back of a screw driver or knife so I thought this might be an ok idea, but I'm with you guys on it, wont see it again. Thanks for the replies!
