2nd knife - Honest opinions and recommendations?

Excellent job! I can tell you really worked hard to keep things symmetrical. It's interesting that scientist say that the human eye finds beauty in symmetry whether it is conscious effort or subconscious.

Thanks a ton for your kind words! I agree I was a little disappointed about the plunge line. I was getting some traveling with the file that rounded it off more than I wanted. I also only noticed the porosity of the wood after the pictures so I plan on going back with a finer grit and some walnut filler for a final poly finish.

My advice would be to skip the poly.

Absolutely fantastic for a second (or tenth) knife! Stick with it.

Don't really have much to add other than what's already been stated. Looks like you did a great job, even if it was your 10th or 20th!

The only thing I might suggest you try for the next one is to work on your hand sanding a little more. You don't need to take it up to 2000 grit or anything. I think wet sanding to 600 is more than adequate for a user.
Check out Nick Wheeler's hand sanding vid if you haven't seen it already.

The handle contour looks really good. You don't see that on a second knife, you have a good eye. My only comment would be to contour the front of the scales on the next one. Sometimes sharp 90 degree angles can draw the eye, and be uncomfortable for the thumb. How goes #3?

Excellent second knife! Just be sure to enjoy each one and have fun. You already show a natural talent and your knives will improve with each one. Walnut is porous and has quite a bit of void in the grain. I think you did a great job.

Try a different wood, maple is cheap and less porous

The spine vies handle looks pretty straight, tryout some different contouring with some practice wood.

The patina looks streaky to me, like you sanded it after the patina.

Try practice with a matte hand sanded finish, or an even patina, or a scotchbrite finish

Pin placement ?
there's a high / low look to me.

Wow my 20th knife was not that nice, great job keep at it. The only thing I would mention is the wood finish, if you're going to use Walnut or any open pore wood I would try a few coats of shellac and sand well between each coat this will help seal the wood and fill any open pores before applying your finish.
