I've read a lot of post here on the forum on grinders but have seen very little said about the Wilton Square Wheel or the J.L. grinder from K&G supply . Any comments on these ?

I've used one for the last 16 years and for grinding are terrific. You have the choice of the wheel or the flat platten. Downside is the noise level and the fast speed. It does a terrific job on initial first grind but the problem is after heat treat with finer belts. Koval several years ago and some others had a smaller drive wheel option that slowed the belt speed down considerably. Now you see that some have a varible speed option to go to also. Like I said speed and noise are the downside. mike

I've used a VS Square Wheel, it's louder than my BK, nice tool. I'd get a KMG or B3 before I got a Square Wheel.

I made my first 2 knives on a Wilton square. Great machines but like others have said it wouldn't be my first choice. Dozier and KMG top the list for me.

I started on a Wilton SW, and still use it all the time.. My favorite grinder now though is the JL vertical.. The JL horizontal is also the bee's knee's IMO...

When I was looking for a new grinder a few folks told me the old square wheel and the new ones are two different animals and that the old ones were better. Not sure now why because I forget but I figured they knew.

I do hear the square wheel with the cover build the way it is is a safer machine for when a belt snaps. With that said though I can't imagine being without my KMG at this point.
